420GSI Tourer various fixes

Post by MatthewL »

Hi. My rear wiper motor is stuck and blows fuse 15. I need to find a replacement if I can’t free it up. Does anyone know if it’s a Tourer-specific part as it put the wiper through 180 degrees and I’m not sure if the normal hatchback one only turns through 90 degrees. Any thoughts? I’ll be shortly working out how to get the tailgate trim off without hopefully breaking anything. The Haynes for the hatchback refers to 2 screws but I can see no equivalent so I’m assuming it’s all trim clips?

Thanks

Matthew

Hi Matthew, I’ve got some tailgate trim if you do break any (dark grey), but will be having a tip run soon, so let me know if you need anything before it goes :)

The hatchback and Coupe wipers move through approx 120 degrees, so are unlikely to be suitable.

The later 'R3' 200 and 25 cars have a wiper that moves through 180 degrees, so there is a possibility that the motor from one of those may be suitable.

Great advice on the R3 motor - thank you. When I get the panel off I’ll compare fittings to see if it’s the same.

Paul - yes mine is the dark grey - if you’re willing to hang on for a week or 2 I’d be really grateful. Just had an op so I’m a bit limited on what spannering I’m allowed to do!

Managed to get the trim off without trim breakage and with clips in tact. Can’t get a good view of motor without removing it. I’ll have to wait until I’m “allowed” to get my socket set out. Have found a chopped off black+black/grey wire pair and the boot mounted rear flood lights don’t work. Suspect this is related. Also the heated rear window contact us off at one side which I’ll have to resolve. Somehow! Go to fix one problem. Find 3!

Still, the wood dash trim came off beautifully and a new bulb in holder is on order so I should have a lit clock tomorrow. I bet none of the dash illumination works!!

You presumably wouldn't need permission to unplug the motor from the loom?
Worth trying that, and seeing if the fuse is still stressed. If so, the motor's
likely fine and you'd be spared your worrying spannering.

That’s a good call. I do wonder whether a dismantle, grease snd reassembly might also bring it to life if that is the fault. I’ve found out the cut black + black/grey wires are for the heated rear window so I need to sort that and work out why the lights aren’t triggered by the tailgate opening. Mind you I think the interior lights aren’t triggering when I open the doors - certainly the drivers door anyway - so there may be a wider issue. Have to switch them on manually at present.

Tourer wiper is specific to that car note washer jet comes from spindle centre. Have you checked for wireing damage where loom comes from body to rear door? Not unknowen for wires to break with constant flexing as door is opened and shut. For your interior lights check door switch earth point via retaining screws. Wiper motor can be unpluged without causeing any problems on R8's.

That’s a good point. A short in the wiring could be the cause of a blowing fuse. I’ll check that next!

Is there a way to get the rear wiper cap off without damaging it? It looks like an irreplaceable part so I don’t want to wreck it!

The kit for reattaching to contact on the heated rear screen has arrived.
