Heater Controls 94 216

Post by Alastair Kidd »

Hi, both heater control knobs rotate 360 degrees without effecting the heater, is there an easy fix without taking the dash to bits?

You don't have to take the dash to bits - the knobs just pull off (carefully). It is probable that the plastic sleeves have fractured and are no longer holding the metal insert tight, so they rotate without actually gripping the inner shaft. In all probability you'll have to try and find some good, used replacements. The plastic sleeves are thin and brittle. The plastic they are made of doesn't seem to stick if you try to repair the fractures with glue - but you could try, although I didn't have any success when trying to stick them. Maybe I used the wrong type of glue, perhaps someone else has had success. If you do try to source used replacements please be aware there are 2 different designs, I'm not sure when they changed but probably when the bubble dash was introduced. I think the later ones just have a longer sleeve but there may be other differences.

Do these merely slide onto the shaft or is there a spring clip inside ? I don't want to break my spare one which doesn't sit flush at present. I don't want to create an additional job if I can help it.Thanks
