Eventually after much practice you'll learn the dark art of lying upside down with your arms seemingly at impossible angles getting to that hard to get to bolt.

Re: Strange noise coming from Alternator and help required.
I was told to use a ring spanner but even with an open ended one I can't do it. With the bolt being recessed I can see what I'm working with. I know thereshould be a nut there but it doesn't feel like it.
Re: Strange noise coming from Alternator and help required.
To be perfectly honest I can't see what I need to be able to release the tension on it as the bolt if there is one on there is recessed and it's impossible to get anything into it due to the bulkhead preventing me access. The only thing I can think of doing is removing the engine which I can't do as I don't have the experience, space or engine lift to do it.E_T_V wrote:Eventually after much practice you'll learn the dark art of lying upside down with your arms seemingly at impossible angles getting to that hard to get to bolt.

I really want the car to be at the BL day on 7th August but it's going to be a no go if I can't get the alternator changed.
Re: Strange noise coming from Alternator and help required.
Did you manage to get it sorted in the end?
Re: Strange noise coming from Alternator and help required.
I managed to get the old one out by cutting the old belt off the car and then had a neighbour come over as his hands are slightly smaller than mine and he was able to remove the 10mm nut.
I've just got to fit the new one now and then replace the single wire connection I damaged when I was trying to get the old alternator off.
By the looks of it the single wire thing connects to the bottom of the thermostat. I'll get some pictures when I get back out to the car when the heavy rain stops.
I did try to gain access through the wheel arch but with my largish hands it was a waste of time. I did manage to loosen the adjustment 13mm nut pointing to the front of the car but gained access to from underneath.
I've also just picked up the repacement one and belt to be fitted into the car in the next few days.

Re: Strange noise coming from Alternator and help required.
Ok first disappointment experienced I've popped out to check the bolt and nut I purchased today to go through the bracket that is in the engine bay that the bottom part of the alternator connects to and from what people have said it should be a long bolt that goes through from one side of the alternator to the other.
I now know why mine has 2 bolts one either side being an absolute swine and the cause of all my misery over the last 2 days it's because it's solid metal in the middle and not hollow. It means I'm going to have to put 2 seperate bolts one either side the same as it came out. And there is no room to drill though the metal to meet the other side due to the exhaust manifold being in the way.

Re: Strange noise coming from Alternator and help required.
Yes, it depends on the car that the alt is fitted to. Some have a single long bolt, some have two.
I could do with a hand as I have large man hands
I'm in need of help of trying to get the alternator now fitted as after the ball ache of removing the bottom bolt on the side of the alternator where the belt is. I now need a hand to be able to get the alternator and belt back on as my neighbour is now away and my hands are too big to be able to get to the bolt. Once I get the alternator fitted I should be able to get the car to somewhere so I can remove the rear seatbelt lower bolt by either welding it or using another technique I've not thought of.
Anyone who is close and has smaller hands is welcome to gimme a hand or two.
I can supply tea/coffee and biscuits and even a sarnie or two and some chat.

Re: Strange noise coming from Alternator and help required.
After spraying some more releasing fluid on the inside on the car I gave the alternator fitting another try. This time however I used the misses and her smaller hands to try screwing the bolt in the hiding hole ( I know that sounds bad bud she managed it) I then tackled ygr other 2 bolts and I'm glad to say that the alternator is now back in the car.
The eagle eyed of you will have noticed the obvious mistake that I haven't fitted the belt. Now I know this and there are a few reasons.
I hurt my hands the other day on a soft play at a friend of my sons the other day and I've got some skin removed from my hands and doing the bolts has pretty much finished me off for a few days that and I'm not 100% happy about doing it with it bring a manual setting up and I don't want to chupa chup it up.
Anyone nearby fancy giving me a hand to fit it? I can't see it taking too long I just need someone who has done one before please.

Re: Strange noise coming from Alternator and help required.
Ive been away for 2 weeks so only now i'm reading this, did you get it sorted?
If i remember that alternator was replaced by a garage not long before i bought the car so if it's failed then that garage has done something wrong!!.
It is a awkward job but is straight forward if your used to doing these things, my wifes Daewoo nexia(remember them)!! is a nightmare to change the alternator cos you need to remove the air con belt first then the air cleaner, wheel arch liner, and remove the bolts and the unit from underneath.
