So my question is what inputs/faults would create a Check Engine light that also stops the autobox lockup working?

A look at the wiring diagram might help with this...

Nope, that's it I'm afraid...

The Workshop manual, might give you other component tests you can perform to root-cause a problem.

Yip, either ALB (Honda ABS :laughing2 ) or non-ALB. Probably lucky to find the former nowadays...

Pretty sure that Honda used a short shaft and bearing/joint bolted to the back of the block to give same-length driveshafts, so you could use a LH one.

This was to reduce torque steer, even though the D-series doesn't really generate much :laughing2 Rover didn't do the same on the other engines...

:welcome Blimey, 4 already ! :laughing2 It looks like you've picked up a nice motor there but make sure you get the head gasket fixed properly, otherwise it'll probably go again. Get the head checked for flatness, and skimmed if necessary, liner heights checked, so you can use the appropriate gasket...

The Honda PGMFI is a clever system. When starting from cold, it will run richer and increase the idle, as pulling the old choke used to do. It shouldn't misfire though... I would have a look at 'ignitor' inside the distributor. It might be worth fitting a new one and see if the problem goes away. In...
