Front and Rear Speaker Diameters

Post by Julesmat50 »

I wonder if anyone can remind me what the diameters are for the door and parcel shelf speakers in an R8 saloon? I'm pretty certain this has been mentioned in topics before, but for some reason I can't find it with a search - probably using the wrong search terms. Are they 5.25in in the doors and 7in in the parcel shelf, or have I just made that up?
Also, as it looks like I may need to replace at least the ones in the doors, is there anything I should be looking for (or avoiding) as I'm no ICE expert and there seems a myriad of terms that may as well be in Klingon for all the sense they make to me! :laughing2
Thanks for any information.

Pretty sure the 400 saloon has 6.5” all round.

Sad man with umpteen R8's just happens to have a couple of U/S front door speakers kicking around for immediate examination! :laughing2

As Dist has said the orifice dia is 6.5 inches; they have a three point flange fixing, where supposedly aftermarket replacements differ in my experience.

The originals come with a shroud that screws to the door orifice; Alpine SXE-1725S are not a straight swop by the way, as they lack the shroud. I suspect that the shroud is designed to keep the weather that gets past the waist rail perfunctory weather seal away from the speaker feed connectors.

I wonder if it's possible to get the factory fit jobs rebuilt with new cones? It's the paper cones that give up.

Just fitted a pair of new Pioneer speakers to the Coupe, as the originals were well past their sell-by date;

They are Pioneer G-Series TS-G1720F - 6.5" 17cm 300 Watts 2 Way Coaxial Door Speakers and were less that £30 on ebay.

Fitment is easy, as you can keep the original plastic mounts. You just have to lever out the retaining tabs...

and then lever out the old speaker

It's a simple job to screw the new speakers to the old mounts.

The connectors are smaller on the new speakers so you'll have to decide to make - do you make a fly lead out of the supplied short harnesses or cut of the originals and crimp on new ones. I did the latter on the basis that if these last for the 30-years the originals have, I won't have to worry :laughing2
