Back again SD3 Vitesse now

Post by CV35Rover »

Hi again
I've bought a 'long standing' (literally) SD3 1600 Vitesse - still got the 57,000 mile R8 420GSi Sport, and an SD1 2600..........
I fully blame the chap I spoke to on the stand at the NEC on the Friday!!!!! :laughing2

Anyway, as usual I wanted to regain my youth (well mid 20s really) and the 216 Vitesse is on its way. Need to assess what new bits it needs - and therein lies the issue. I can get the simple bits like brake parts, basic service items but can't find a specialist anywhere for any other bits I might need. I'm hoping it needs very very little but don't want to start dismantling the car for want of a door seal or timing belt tensioner. Tried ebay but most parts come up 'this does not fit your car'.

Cant even find a dedicated SD3 Forum (albeit with only about 100 left, that was a bit of a long shot!), so does anyone know of any suppliers who sell bits for this model - Rimmers don't.

Thanks

Ian

For anything related to the drivetrain, anybody who knows Maestros/Montegos inside out would be your best bet (probably worth registering on the Maestro/Montego forum as well as ours :wink3 )

We have a growing SD3 community here, with one of our members believed to own 5 of them at the last count! So we are definitely the club to give you the everyday support and encouragement.

Finally, some body and trim items may be common to other Hondas of the period (Ballade, obviously, but also look at some of the contemporary Civics)
Is your Vitesse the first edition (high boot sill) or the later one (low boot sill)? Last time I looked at Rimmers, they had a few bumpers and other random items.
I believe 'DBP' was the model-specific part number prefix for many SD3 body and trim components.

There's a 1989 216 SD3 being broken on E-bay at the moment.

Thanks chaps.
Its a pre face lift high boot model - as per my SD1, I like lifting things!!
I spotted the one being broken earlier on, might call on that for any used bits.
Shopping starts Wednesday when it arrives (got a delivery cheaper than hiring a trailer plus fuel and time off!).

Well it arrived today, looking in detail:
It looks like it needs a rear exhaust, a small bit of welding on OSR sill and tyres.
Brakes work but are binding - might just replace the calipers if they dont free off easily - as well as the flexi pipes/rear cylinders - plus pads/shoes.
Most electrics work, windows a bit iffy (drivers one dead, Pass one OK, rears only work from the rear switches), CDL woken up nicely, one blown indicator bulb. Fan works on all 3 speeds.
Engine turns by hand, have lubed bores a bit will re lube tomorrow and then leave over weekend. Geras all select smoothly.
Main thing to do is replace the injector loom, however the one supplied is a complete section so its should just be a case of unplugging one and plugging in the other......once thats done i'll try some injector cleaner and new fuel/plugs - and then it might fire up.
If it does fire up i'll get on with the rest of the stuff above along with a service.

Only real downer is the underbonnet area, ill need the most potent degreaser money can buy! Off to get that tomorrow.

Just to give you a little peace of mind if you decide to have a go at starting it: the 'S' series engine is safe as far as the cambelt is concerned, so if it is past its 'best before' date and decides to break on you, it won't do any internal damage :)

Oily engine bay.........the 'S' series is one of the least oil-tight engines ever to come out of BL/Rover, but looking on the good side, it helps to rustproof the underbody. Also quite prone to forming mayonnaise in the oil filler tube, so don't be alarmed if you find a mess in there: you are unlikely to have any head gasket issues.

What colour is it?

Thanks but managed to get a complete rear exhaust from Rimmers - plus an alternator belt for £40 delivered.

Thats good to know, although new timing belt already here!
Its not really leaky oil (!!) its almost looks like they have sprayed engine with a gooey protective film - underseal? So cleaning off carefully......
Its black and still has original badges and decals.
Hoping to do a couple of hours today maybe get the replacement loom plugged in - one thing at a time. Also need to remove driveshafts from Chamois as well as wire in new fuel pump!

OK so for once I'm being sensible.
Spent half a day going over what needs doing and what time and room I have available. I'd hoped to get this running and moving by now as I'm blocking a couple of other people's cars as well as my chammy in the storage space, I now think it's not going to happen quickly enough and i don't have funds to simply send it to a garage.
I've bought most bits needed (bar brakes and alternator) but my electrical guru can't get to it for a while for loom repair so I've decided I really should have bought the low mileage roadworthy white one about three years ago.
Its on ebay for what it now owes me but I'd rather sell to a forum member who is less likely to break it.
Its listed as 216 Vitesse so easy to find.
Sad, but sensible, I may have to move it outside in a week or so so I hope someone is interested.
Located near J12 /J13 M40.
I'm going to drown my sorrows later.
