OBD II Diagnostic Socket

Post by tonyinbeds »

Does the Rover 216 have an OBD at all?
Cheers

Yes, it should be behind the centre console on the drivers side, Black multi-plug with yellow inside.

But.... A basic OBD2 probably won't connect as it needs uses a different system.

I think it needs to be MEMS compatable.

Pscan.uk can connect to the men’s 1.6 diagnostic port.
Only a car 96 on (bubble dash) will have an obd port.

Is Pscan the only OBD diagnostics tool that will work on a (MEMS2 ?) K1.8 VVC?

If not, can anyone recommend one please? :)

As far as I am aware yes, but check the website as they have listed all the cars it’s been tested on.

If the 216 you're talking about is your own, then no. Honda-engine cars up to 1995 didn't have an ODB socket - they use a blinking LED in the casing to show you what the ECU (engine/engine sensor) fault codes are...

If you're talking about reprogramming key fobs, etc. then yes - it will have a socket for this purpose located as per the other posts in this thread.

There are other diagnostic tools available, but it's not clear how much they can do or whether there are any instructions for use, etc. Look on Ebay for "MG Rover diagnostic tool." You'll even see 3-pin to USB cables which you can use with laptops and mobile phones (with the correct app) to display basic data, but again - how much can the apps do for you other than reveal basic statistics?

One that's well known and has been around for ages is the T300+ programmer, but again I'm not sure how much it can do. There was someone on Ebay selling a £20-£30 cable so you could use it to add key fobs, etc. specifically on MG Rover cars with the Lucas alarm/immobiliser system, but I'm really not sure how much it can do with ECUs.

Given PSCan continues to be developed, documented and tested for MG Rover vehicles, I'd lean towards one of those rather than others. It's possible that if you knew the OBD protocol, you could use any tool to send commands to the ECU, etc. but you would to a certain extent be "flying blind" - having to interpret what information came back when you issue a command, whether the commands have even succeeded, and whether you've broken something by sending the wrong one or wrong sequence. At least with PScan you know they've tested everything they say it can do, and there's a scrolling window full of instructions and interpreted responses back from the ECU so you know you've done the thing you were trying to do.

Is a 200 VVC covered by MEMS 1.9 or 2J ? It can't be a case of falling between 2 stools... my money is on 2J :wink3
