Expansion tank
Expansion tank
Hi all, after replacing the head gasket on my 45 I’m left with an oil stain in the expansion tank. Does anyone know of a product I can use to clean it ?
Re: Expansion tank
I took mine out, added a mix of engine degreaser fluid and small gravel, and shook it around.
The gravel took the muck off.

Re: Expansion tank
Remove the Expansion Tank, block the hose holes, fill with hot water, drop in a Dishwasher tablet & shake vigorously. Rinse & replace.
Dishwasher tabs are also good for cleaning the water system before a Water Pump/Coolant change. Some people leave them in for up to 200 miles before changing to allow thorough system cleaning.
You must rinse thoroughly before refilling the system.

Re: Expansion tank
This is the best way-degreaser such as brake cleaner together with something like gravel to agitate and scrape away the oily film. You’ll be amazed how well it comes up!
Re: Expansion tank
Petrol and rice if they are realy bad , followed by dishwash tablet , no smoking

Re: Expansion tank
Just a quick update,I cleaned the expansion tank with degreaser and small gravel come up a treat but if like me you have a later vehicle with a low coolant level sensor it might be better not to use gravel as it gets jammed between the float and casing thus causing the warning lamp to either stay on or not work at all .I fixed it eventually but the small gravel chips were a devil to remove.
