How many R8's left - do we have a definitive number?

Post by tompinney »

Has the club got any definitive current idea as to how many R8 Rover 200/400's are left on the road? How many left I don't fully trust the accuracy of and at the same time it doesn't record by individual registered models of a particular generation so I can't just search for all "Rover 200" and "Rover 400" because they don't make any distinction between the R8, R3 and HHR variants.

When you search how many left it suggests the following numbers as of Q4 2020:
Rover 200 series: Taxed: 3338 SORN: 9017
Rover 400 series: Taxed: 1584 SORN: 4239

I'm currently developing some interesting leads to get more accurate data based on VIN numbers (something I've been trying to do on and off for years) and one such lead is showing some early signs of promise at present :) From that source I've been told there are currently 7214 R8 Rover 200/400's still about based on VIN information. I've not yet confirmed with my source if that is just taxed or taxed and SORN, but based on the howmany left numbers it would seem to suggest that number does likely include SORN vehicles.

Doing it by VIN should enable analysis by build configuration, and get valuable insight to aid provision of specific repair parts.

That’s a great number considering the youngest is what 22?

How many Ford escorts or Vauxhall Astra or similar of the same era are left

I've got nothing better than howmanyleft which we all know is limited.

I took appropriate proportions in crossover years between R8 and R3 when generating the data for this - https://www.aronline.co.uk/opinion/mg-r ... many-left/

I would be very interested in anything VIN based for obvious reasons :cool

I have what I hope are some definitive numbers based on a cut of DVLA bulk data for the R8 dated from 4th May 2021:

Based on those records there are 7189 Taxed and SORN R8 remaining on UK roads with the breakdown as follows (based on decoding the body style from the VIN):

2dr Cabriolet = 1457
2dr Coupe = 1540
3rd Hatchback = 283
4dr Saloon = 1525
5dr Hatchback = 1816
Tourer = 522

The eagle eyed will spot that the maths doesn't add up to the total number, that's because I have about 40 cars that I couldn't load into my database that I need to inspect manually and a further 6 or so that I can't work out the bodystyle from the letter in VIN because it doesn't match with any of the decoding information in the EPC :S

This is just a very crude first pass having only had the day for less than 24 hours and I have a LOT more work to refine the data to do some more meaningful analysis of specific models etc. More to follow as I have time to inspect that data.

About 1% of production?

Not that low. I reckon a good guess would be somewhere around the 10% remaining mark is more likely, although I have no evidence to back that up though.

The DVLA data I have is only Taxed and SORN cars, anthing untaxed (i.e. scrapped) isn't included.

Sadly no build totals, but I might be able to determine that from the later EPCs because apparently they do have the VINs listed. My early 2002 EPC copy doesn't have that information sadly.

An interesting if slightly useless stat, 267 of these cars are still with their original purchaser and one is on its 22nd owner :o
