Driveshafts - ABS / Non ABS Compatibility

Post by StubbornPatriot »

There seem to be a number of driveshafts for sale at the moment, from various sources. Sometimes at a tempting price. Most of these are ABS driveshafts. Neither of my 216 GSis (D16A7) nor my 416 Tourer (K Series) have ABS. Can you directly fit an ABS driveshaft (complete) to a non-ABS set up? Is the only difference the ABS ring? Are the ABS rings just an interference fit and could be heated up and removed? Otherwise, would I need to replace the outer CV with a non-ABS one? Or are they not compatible at all? Thanks, Duncan.

Yip, there're the same shafts and joints just with the sintered 'pulsar' ring heat shrunk on.

You don't really need to remove them unless you think it would confuse an MOT tester or you're after the ultimate weight savings... :laughing2

Can't see why not the length would be the same and hubs will be the same apart from the fixing ( boss with tapped holes ) for the sensor which we be there or justvthe unmachined the boss for fixing . Fill you boots Duncan.
I've sold 25 diesel driveshafts that fit Tomcat turbo with no ABS straight fit no mod needed .

Just a word about interchangeability - driveshaft lengths and joint sizes differ across engines but pulsar rings also differ across ALB/ABS systems.

Honda's ALB system on D-series cars have a different number of 'teeth' (they're actually poles :cool ) to those for Rover Bosch systems.

There are also 2 different pulsar rings for Bosch ABS systems - one for the earlier ABS2E system and one for the later ABS5/5.3. They have a different number of teeth and are not interchangeable so make sure you get the right one.

They have something like 37 and 45 teeth respectively.

If you want to remove the sintered 'pulsar' ring can it be broken off with a chisel and hammer if its a sintered material?

I recently removed the toothed ABS ring on a replacement drive shaft on my Renault Clio.

I used a large diameter steel punch to ease it off as a complete part. I guess a chisel would work just as well. :)
