Noise from power steering.

Post by Stan Thomas »

Good morning all,

Yesterday I noticed a noise as I steered left or right, which was there when I stoped the car and turned the steering - although it then subsided when I drove off. Is this a symptom that it might need bleeding or a more ominous sign of impending doom? The car has done 41K miles, there are no oil leaks and the oil is clean and at the correct level.

According to the Haynes manual I can bleed the system by turning the steering from lock-to-lock (presumably with the car jacked up).
Regards to all,

By way of an up-date, Just come to use the car and noticed a power steering fluid oil-stain on the drive and the reservoir is half-empty.

Until I can get the car jacked up to investigate, is there a "usual" problem I should be looking for?

Check for split hoses first of all. I had a slight power steering leak on my SEi recently and a renewed all the jubilee clips and that solved it :)

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your advice - I've done a cursory check and found the return hose (which has just a metal clamp) can easily be turned on the pipe, both ends. Looking at previous posts, they say to change to jubilee clips etc. Clever lot, these Rover Owners!!

If it was the BMW Owners Club they would just be sending me the addresses of the nearest franchised dealers. Hope its not the pump, as they appear to be unobtainable, although I don't know if there is a service kit available if anyone can advise as such.

Regards to all,

I had my T16 PAS Pump reconditioned. I'll pass on the details if you find you need them.

The pump will make odd noises if it's trying to suck and pump air !

It should go back to normal once refilled but if not, a pump rebuild may be required. I have a source, in addition to Duncan's, so you'll have choice. Fingers crossed you don't need it...

Thanks for all your help lads. Apparently, the pump is leaking, although I don't put much score on those "pour in and stop-leak" products - unless anyone can advise me otherwise!!.

However, according to Eurocarparts on the Internet, they stock a pump for the "T" series engine at a cost of £209.99. Being Sunday I cannot check it out but will do so first thing tomorrow.

The 'stops leaks' stuff should perhaps be referred to as 'stops working'...

A rebuild would cost less but then the car's off the road while it's done. Pls don't throw away the old one though as this could help the next person with a rebuild :cool

Good morning John,

A good idea to keep the old pump to help someone out - but what Eurocarparts do not say in their advert is there is an additional charge of £45 refundable when you return the old unit. This seems a little strange because the unit they supplied is positively brand new, and certainly not just a recon. Their service was excellent and they souced the pump overnight.

Their Product code for the punp is 61970122.

I'm surprised by this, have you fitted it yet? :S

They have gone down hill since they were taken over some time ago imo.
