I recently aquired a 1994 216 SLi (my 5th R8 216!).
This is the first SOHC 216 that I've owned so, before I disappear down a parts catalogue rabbit hole, I was wondering if there are any lists of parts that are (or are not) common to SOHC and DOHC models of the same era (in my case the long indicator 1992 - 1996 models)?
For example, I think I'm right in saying that the exhaust downpipe and rear silencer are different but the cat. and intermediate pipe are the same...
Thanks in advance.

R8 216 - Parts common to SOHC and DOHC models
Re: R8 216 - Parts common to SOHC and DOHC models
The PAS pump is a different assy but is the same body with a very slightly different inlet stub-tube, which can be swapped over. The suction hose and HP hose are slightly different too.
All this is because the PAS pumps are in slightly different positions due to the extra width of the DOHC heads.
The engine wiring loom and dizzy are slightly different as the DOHC has a separate cam position sensor - the SOHC's is integral to the dizzy, so has 2 connectors.

I like Twin Cams.... and Single Cams...and now Turbos

Inlet manifold and ecu difference also and powered steering pipe to pump but this can be bent using heat to suit .

There basically different cars Hardly anything is the same even the engine blocks are different
214 Sprint track car
216 GTi track car
216 GTi DOHC
216 GTi Dunlop challenge race car

That seems a bit harsh

However, I take your point - it's probably better to think of them as two different models that have some parts in common rather than two variants of the same model.
Having said that, when I was driving the car home I was struck by how familiar it felt - rather like a DOHC that needed a good service and a new set of dampers!

The oil filters are the same, although the SOHC engine block hasn't got an oil cooler, so is harder to remove. Same air cleaner.JohnH wrote: ↑Tue Oct 29, 2024 9:30 amThat seems a bit harsh![]()

Re. my original post, I have since rediscovered a MG Rover "trade" publication that I found on eBay more than a decade ago.
It's title is "Original Parts Selector" (Issue 2, August 2004) and it lists the part number and applicability of a range of service & repair parts for all the MG Rover models.
So I now know, for example, that the spark plugs and distributor cap are different but the rotor arm is common to both models.
However, it would appear I was wrong about the exhaust intermediate pipe since the selector lists separate part numbers for the SOHC and DOHC...
