1998 Rover 414S

Post by leyton057 »

Hi all

I'm 16 years old at the time of writing, and can't even begin to start driving for another 9 months! However, I'm now on my fourth Rover... I blame my grandad for this, I have many memories of his Rover 400 and 45 from when I was very young, and I have always liked Rover since then. I had my first 75 aged 12 :o

Fast forward to 2025, I have acquired a very nice 414S which I plan to keep for a lot longer than my last 3 Rovers. It has really only had 1 owner from new; supplied by Colwyn Bay Rover dealer in 1998, and sold to Mr. Wynn who then had it from 1999 to 2024. It had been sat in his garage idle since 2019, and was eventually sent to a scrapyard in Rhyl for £150. However, all was not over for the car, as it was then purchased by somebody who got all the necessary fixes done and got it through an MOT. It was then parked up again in his garage until I bought it in December 2025.

Cosmetically, it's in lovely condition. Rather annoyingly it appears the head gasket has had it - as a temporary fix it's had some Steel Seal which should be enough to get it through an MOT (it has never failed one, yet!) and then the proper job will be carried out afterwards. I think the car is a stunner and I am rather looking forward to its future. In terms of other jobs, the badges all got taken off while at the scrapyard, so I will get some new ones on it, other than that, it seems to be alright. The pre-MOT check will confirm what really needs doing.

Blimey, 4 already ! :laughing2

It looks like you've picked up a nice motor there but make sure you get the head gasket fixed properly, otherwise it'll probably go again. Get the head checked for flatness, and skimmed if necessary, liner heights checked, so you can use the appropriate gasket* and replace the inlet manifold seal while you're at it.

Great to see someone of the generation behind me taking an interest in the classic scene and getting involved :cool

You may have discovered a life hack - Rovers are relatively cheap to insure!

4 before I even have a license - I dread to think what the future holds! :laughing2
Thankfully the mechanic my family have used since moving to Suffolk in early 2000s is carrying out the job. It's not an ideal thing to have happen when you have just bought a car, but at least we will know that the job has been done properly and hopefully it shall last a while!

It really does! Very happy with the purchase, even if it does need the head gasket doing. Apart from a very small part of bubbling, its got great paintwork and is very solid all round

Got to keep the family tradition going ! :*laughs*:
In terms of insurance, good ! Even if it's expensive I'd much rather spend out to drive a car I enjoy than one I have to force myself to drive, if you know what I mean !

That is a nice looking car!

I’d heard Footman James do classic insurance for young drivers - is that right?

My kids are 8 and 10 so if insurance is possible for a 17 year old on a Rover I’d better get stock piling some hood cars and dripping the idea of Rover ownership in their ears :D

Keep us all posted!

That is NICE.

I don't care what they say, I'll always defend the 400 HH-R, it was great.

I hope so! I've still got 9 months until I can even take my theory *laughs*!
