Id first like to say hello to everyone.
Ive just bought a not very well looked after 220 GTi 1993 on a K plate.

I would like some advice for the following please:

Ignition Leads, standard. Here is a link to a shop i can buy them from http://www.ignitionleads.co.uk/ Im confused with what the ORIGINAL FIT LEADS With original spark Plug Boot and ORIGINAL FIT LEADS Alternative Plug Boot mean. All i want is the leads that will fit, ive no idea what Alternative Plug and all thats about :shock: Can someone shed some light on this please?

Ill be fitting a new battery, spark plugs (bosch super 4), ignition leads (if i ever figure it out) *wink, wink.* Ill be getting a K&N induction kit at the end of the month and ill also have to try and fix the clock. Well, the clock works and keeps perfect time but the bulb behind it has gone (if there is one) so i wondered if anyone knew if there was a bulb behind it that can be replaced? I will change the oil + filter and coolant. Is there a better oil i should use? I tend to use the bluecol coolant on all the cars ive owned...

The drivers side electric window doesnt work, i can hear the motor running but the window doesnt go up or down. How would i take the inside of the door off to see if its come of its belt?

Don't fit Bosch Super 4's. They are a waste of money and perform worse than standard plugs.

Assuming the 220 clock is the same as the 214, then YES, you cad change the bulb, it's not too much of a problem.

You need to CAREFULLY pry the trim out that contains the clock (IIRC you start at the passenger door end and work carefully around - it is held on with big plastic/spring clips - nothing a gentle pry with a large flat blade screwdriver won't sort!). Once that is out, I'm pretty sure the clock is attached to the trim panel - the bulb is in the back, it is like an instrument panel illumination bulb, but it's a different size. Best to take it out and pop along to your local motor factors.

This is the interior i have mate - http://www.roverklubben.se/bilder/200/2 ... terior.jpg - its just back to front. But you can see the type of clock of have with the wood effect surround. Should i still follow your instructions and take the wood trim out carefully and follow as to what youve said?

I juat want to be certain :)

Yes that's the one. Work from the outside end, doing one clip at a time - I seem to remember they're about every 10-15cm, so about 4 or 5 of them.

Its not difficult to do, I did as a passenger when we were on the way to a rally...at night :D

Any normal plugs will be fine (NGK, Champion, Bosch (not the 4's). Also replace the distributer cap and rotor arm at the same time. If you go to a good motorfactor then they'll supply you with everything you need over the counter. I've no idea what the different types of leads you've spotted are. I just order standard ones and fit them and they work perfectly well :D

As for oil then get a good semi-synthetic 10w40 or fully synthetic if you are feeling flush.

I looked at NGK plugs yesterday E_T_V so ill get them tomorrow and stick em in.

Would you belive that my distributer is on its way out. I had a 216 GTi and thought that the one from that would fit my 220 and save me 200 quid. Nope, different engines so im still another 200 quid down on my luck.

NM, ill get this beautiful car back on the road.

I cant belive the way the last owner treated it. :shock:

E_T_V, ive just looked on the Castrol website and they recommend their "Edge" Oil for the 220 GTi/GSi Edge 0W-30 or their other one was GTX MAGNATEC 10W-40... Spot on mate 8)

The 220s don't have a distributor like the Honda engined ones, so you won't be £200 down straight off :D All you have is a rotor arm attached directly to the cam and a cap, all the electrickety is taken care of by the ECU, so you'd get cap and rotor for around the £10-15 mark :D

So all i need is a Rover 200 distributor cap and rotor arm.
Ill go to Motor Mania and ask them to get me them.

Today the car cut out, it was doing the exact same thing that my 216 GTi did, it was ok for a short journy but after a while it started to lose its power and cut out while driving. I changed the whole distributor/igniter unit in teh 216 and it went perfect. But i take it that the engine i have now is teh Rover, not teh Honda and i wont need to replace the whole thing Mark? Just the distributor cap and rotor arm and she'll be ok...

I hope so as i have a budget of only a few hundred i want to spend on the engine. :D

Yes it's a Rover engine you have now, not a Honda one :) You could sell the dizzy you have on get a few quid back towards this one ;)

All you will need is a car and rotor arm, there are no other replaceable parts inside. However, as yours is a 220 on a K plate you're right on the changeover between the T series and M series engines, easiest way to tell, as no doubt you'll be asked is by the cam covers. T series (later ones) have black plastic cam covers, while the early M series ones have alloy ones with ROVER picked out in bare metal.
