416 AUTO white smoke

Post by Kapri »

Our 94 SLI AUTO Tourer has decided to start belching white smoke which is obviously engine coolant as you can smell the antifreeze in it.

This is theSOHC 16 valve Honda engine and they are supposed to be good on head gaskets I'm informed ( all our others have been fine ) .

It starts fine and no smoke until it's hot and been left to sit for 1/2 hour or so or if left ticking over. This evening I took the rad cap off and went for a drive to check whether it was pressurisation pumping water into the bores but when it came back no smoke at all?

Anyway the temp gauge has been ( and still is ) fine , no water thrown out and no mayo in water or oil so is there anywhere else that water could get into the bores .This is a really nice low milage car but paying to have the head gasket done ( and possibility of that NOT being the problem ) means it may be scrapped if it's not a simpler fix.

Thanks in advance.

I'd be tempted to get a pressure test done and see if it is the head or head gasket. It could be a cracked head rather than the headgasket. Some people may also suggest K seal as an option if the crack isn't severe. I guess you have nothing to lose.
