im getting fed up of my car...

Post by Clawjaw »

shes been perfect since i changed the crank sensor and now shes got the same mo...

ok so i was coming back from asda which is around 3 miles from me and all teh way there she was perfect then 1 mile back she started to judder and teh revs were all over the place but not once did she cut out... i tried to keep her under 2000 revs and not go over 3rd gear and she was ok with this, still juddering but got me home... at idle shes perfect like theres nothing at all wrong and it sounds like theres something lose in the engine cus i can hear clanging :glare

obviously the engine was hot so i couldnt check the dizzy and rotor arm and the other stuff but i noticed my fan had come unattatched from the radiator. you know that thing on the side.. so i plugged it in, turned the key to position 2 and the fan kicked in i let it finish the cycle before turning her over. i thought this might have been the cause so i took her round the block and she did the same thing, juddering and if i floored her the exaust makes loud popping sounds and she judders even more...

is this my crank sensor again or something else? i know most of you will tell me to check the dizzy, rotor arm, leads and plugs which i will do tomorow when the engine has cooled down.

i am really fed up with this now :humbug

Sounds like a misfire. I'd check the HT leads, rotor arm and coil connections.

Check the wiring for the crank sensor to make sure it is all plugged in properly.

Do you live anywhere near Mattw as I'm just off to his in a mo to have a look at his car for him.

Drop me a text and if you are close by I'll try and take a look.

I had a very similar problem that occured when i first got my cab and gave it a full service.

Eventually we discovered the fault was a faulty fuel filter, the new filter i'd just fitted was faulty! Shame it took me ages of refitting old parts to isolate what was causing the problem. We were convinced it could'nt have been the fuel filter at first though!

thanks for all yours help... ok remind me, if my crank sensor is to blame then the car wont judder/misfire till its warm? is this the same with the fuel filter or will it judder/misfire when cold?

If it is a crank sensor fault then when the car misfires the rev counter will also bounce up and down. If it is a HT lead fault etc then the rev counter won't wobble.

Crank sensors usually break down when the engine is hot.
Fuel filters will cause issues no matter whether the engines are hot or cold usually.

HT leads usually either die when the engine gets hot, or when it is cold and damp.

right new dizzy cap, rotor arm and plugs and still she does it...

the missfire causes the rev counter to jump but at idle shes perfect so im guessing my crank sensor has gona again?

what would cause it to go so soon after been changed?

edit:... ok ive just checked and its been neally 2 years exactly since i changed my last crank sensor see here. is 2 years ok for the part to last?

They should last a lot longer than 2 years. It may be worth removing it and checking if it has iron filings stuck to it (which cause it to give a weaker signal).

The sensor is magnetic so the iron filings will simply wipe off.

My turbo has just had the original one replaced (21 years on!)
