Universal Electric Windows / Remote Central Locking

Post by 214cab »

Are these universal kits any good? Consider fitting them to my cabby, i did start collecting the electric window parts to retro fit but none of the main loom wiring is in place so thinking it might be easier to use a universal kit.

As my early cabriolet is key operated locking too, thinking of fitting a remote central locking kit whilst i'm in there aswell.

I had a chat to a guy on ebay about this the other day as im looking at my rear windows

if its just the front you will be fine and they will fit i was garanteed 100% on this

The back is a diffrent question they told me that there would not be any space and that they will not attach to the window mec im taking my cards out the back this weekend to check

Hope this helps

On a quick note replacing the complete loom on the cabby is easy and would make a much better job but it takes a lot more work

Hope this is of help

Loom easy to change you say? Is the loom in sections?

Ie is the engine bay seperate from the main car? If it is i'd consider doing it but don't much fancy ripping the wiring out of the engine bay complete!

I guess if i had a loom i could basterdise the missing bits into my current wiring.

Front windows are easy to swap over for electric ones, rears, I'm afraid will have to remain on the winders.

For the central locking, it may be easier to just get a decent alarm system that includes remote locking, rather than a cheap kit I fitted a Toad system to our old 214 to enable remote locking.

Thanks guys. The more i think about it i might try a standard install for the electric windows, as i have virtually all the parts bar the wiring in the car, plus i want to swap to electric mirrors too. (ie i've got the door looms, electric window control box and the winders (not 100% sure they are from a cabby though i assume standard 3 door r8 winders will work.))

I guess i need to find a scrappy who'll actually let me get at a car rather than want to take bits off for me!

mach1rob where abouts in Dorset are you? I live in Poole (work in Blandford)

Not that i'm fussed about the rears, i'm sure someone on here was looking at building a kit for it.

Trents will let you in, at a cost though! £1 last time I went few months back, just tell them you're after some interior trim :wink3

You may find the loom up to the A pillar includes with window wiring if you're lucky, meaning plug and play for the door loom.

Do you have the door switches too? Don't forget you'll end up with holes in the doorcard where the winder used to be, and you'll need to make holes for the switches.

Not 100% sure on the arm for the windows, I suspect they'll be the same, but the channel that attaches to the window may be shorter to allow for the cabby having the quaterlight, may need some jiggery pokery worst case scenario.

I'm other side of Bournemouth, so not too far from you.

I have done many a window conversion in my time. I would fit the standard ones in the front and just wire them up as an accessory and use the standard switch's etc.

You can get blanks for the door card and many are still in stock with Rover. Best ones to use are the later Rover 100 ones as there the correct colour.

Rear canbe done also, but tricky and not very reliable as the cable setup is very poor to start with and was not made for the torque of an electric motor.
