Remove / Change Gear Knob

Post by 214cab »

How do you change the gear knob? Mine is very worn so i'd like to replace it with an original one in better condition.

I assume its not as simple as unscrewing it since the lift for reverse is fitted with the gearstick etc.

In my 214 cabby. Have to lift a 'ring' under the gearknob to engage reverse.

It 'might' unscrew but without wanting to apply too much pressure (and risk breaking something) it did'nt budge a mm.

1.4 shouldn't have a lift to reverse. At least mine didn't!

1.4 K R65 box ? never seen a lift reverse

it should just be a unscrew gear knob

I'm glad to report that i'm not mad, and also the gear knob itself does just unscrew just needed a little brute force.

But to engage reverse i do have to lift a 'ring' attached to the gearstick surround. I can take a photo if you're interested.

How can i identify the gearbox type / model? The engine is a 1.4 16v SPI if that makes any difference.

Very early ones had a lift to reverse, but I would have thought by the time the cabs came along they had all changed to the normal selector.

As seen here.
