I've just had problems with my 1.6 'box. Would the 2.0 'box you have be a direct or feasible replacement?
I love my new coupe!!
I dont know, to be honest, but I am sure there is someone here who will ....Marc wrote:Hey Adrian,Adrian wrote:Just a thought ...but is the 220 gearbox the same as a 1400, cos if it is I have one you can have for free ..., as far as I know its fine and it wont have been far ....

I had the gearbox in my 90' 214GSI overhauled.
At 116k the clutch began slipping :( - oil seal had failed, during overhaul it also was found that some shims had broken and bits were floating in the oil
I trusted the job to a techy I know, Ex- AR trained, and he told me broken shims are a common problem and often cause the gearbox to jam.
However this was the first box he had done due to oil seal failure.
Slightly off thread but related: is the early R8 box different to the later one :?:
My 90'214GSi had the original 'collar lift reverse' box with square gear knob, the whole feel of the gearbox was far more tighter and the gate felt more defined than that in my '95 214 Si?

Re: Gearboxes
I've just rebuilt my PG1 on my coupe (see the gallery) and its defo a DIY-able job if you're compentent with a spanner and take the time to follow the instructions. I rebuilt mine over the space of a fortnight doing a little bit each evening after work. However I don't know much about the box on the 1.4, so can't really help you there. As for parts, have a word with Paul at P S Bearings (formerly The Bearing Shop) he's a real nice guy to deal with and he got me all the uprated steel cage bearings for my box. Tell him I pointed you in his direction. The R8 Man wrote:Just a quick question, how easy is it to rebuild a 1400 gearbox on a DIY basis, has anyone tried?
