Cabriolet Front Strut Brace

Post by RMS1974 »

Good afternoon, I have just fitted a front strut brace to the Cabriolet, thought it might be worth a post.

It wasn't quite plug & play, the brace at normal height would have fouled the brake fluid reservoir & the washer bottle.

The bottle could be rejigged, therefore I had to workaround the brake reservoir.

I made some "steps" for the suspension strut threads by using 10mm threaded hex to raise the height by 20mm, this allowed the brace to sit allowing a clearance for the reservoir.

I also machined the bolts to use up the free space in the hex, everything was assembled using threadlock & torqued accordingly.

I was able to still use the washer bottle in its normal position, by reversing the bottle holder fitting, and making a new bracket attached to the strut.

It's a snug fit when closed, the strut ends just making a light impression on the under bonnet felt.

Overall I'm pleased with the end result, I'll see how it performs when it goes out next month.

If its doesn't work out it can always revert to standard.

Very nice.

I'm hoping to not have similar issues due to running a K-Series, plus the strut brace is an OMP.

Thanks,

I got mine from Discount MG Rover Spares.

I'm thinking how best to do the rear, minimising any damage to the boot lining.

Buy some more boot liners to cut?

I know Rover Revival did this to their Cabby, have a look at the thread for photos.

Very good :). I wonder if that would help with the box flex that you get in cabriolet models?

On another note did you get to the bottom of the ABS light issue?

K series alot better to fit as you can see and back end never had issue I've own a few cabbys and some are worse than others with the shakes .
I was told your better putting the brace under the boot across rear arms but it's not a works rally car is it 😉

Ah, sure is.

It was a bit of a faff fitting, but did a run yesterday and it was an improvement.

I’ve made progress, with the bulb fitted and codes read, there were 2 faults, first was the ABS relay, sorted that, but that was masking the main problem, the motor/pump assembly.

I have a complete ABS unit from the States, I plan to split the necessary donor parts, after that I’ll strip the old unit and see if it’s fixable.

I have also temporarily have it sorted whereby the light comes on and goes off.
