Silver trim inserts in bodyside rubbing strips

Post by MatthewL »

Has anyone got a picture please of the back of the silver strips in the rubbing strips or bumpers for an R8? Planning to remove mine and try chrome paint on them but need to know how to remove them without damage. All advice welcomed! Matthew

The bumper ones have integral tangs at intervals which push into slots in the bumper.
The rubbing strip ones have a flat back and are held in by fiercely strong spongy
double-sided adhesive tape.

Be aware there's a very good chance they will break when trying to remove them. I recently decided to buy brand new ones to replace the old faded ones on the front bumper both sides. When removing the old faded ones they snapped due to being brittle.
Even when they were out they were considerably less flexible than the new ones.

Might be easier to remove bumper and push them out from behind rather than just trying to ease them out. Also maybe use a bit of heat to help them move easier.

You know what I’m going up ask now….. how can I get my hands on sone new ones? :D

Thinking it through I wonder if I should just paint them in situ. I have sone superb masking tape- might be the least worst option.

The silver bumper ones were still on sale at Rimmers when I brought mine only a few months ago but I haven't looked lately.

If you can't find them then I would say good masking tape cut precisely would be 100% better than trying to remove them as I think that might end in tears :headbanging

I didn't care about breaking my old ones so didn't try too hard but even so they broke pretty easily

and the other side

They are different for different models so check the ones you need

I refurbished mine by using a Chrome 'Sticky Back Plastic' :D

Warmed them with a hot air gun BEFORE popping from Bumper, this reduces the risk of Tabs breaking. Applied strips of SBP & shrunk wrapped with a hot air gun. Pop them back in whilst still warm, job done.

Blue Peter would be so proud :laughing2

Thanks everyone. Great advice. I’ve decided to try “chrome” paint and lacquer. May wait until I have the bumper off before trying pushing out the trim. The chrome strips on the side trim almost fell out when I used a trim tool.

Will look at the Rimmers link and see if it’s a palleysble cost!

Thanks again.
