Finally got around to fitting the front and rear engine mounts which took so long to sort a - I fitted the tie bar one some time back and the driver side one looks pretty decent and I’ve not been able to find a replacement for that one anyway.

Wow - what a difference! No jerking on and off the throttle, vibrations at tickover gone and… finally… my 3500 rev cabin vibration gone! Car now super smooth and quiet at 70. Oh and clutch judder gone!

I am massively impressed- like a new car!

Sounds like a screaming success. As you've noticed, engine mounts are a significant contributor to the refinement of the cars. I hadn't considered clutch judder, but yes, I had noticed something on my car as well. It was just that I'd trained my left foot to try and match the revs perfectly on a gear change. I was fearing some kind of odd clutch plate wear that meant I'd have to have a change the clutch long before it was due (as a result of wear), so I was driving it really considerately. Thinking about it, changing the front mount made the problem go away. I think engine mounts should probably be on our list of "critical components" for the cars.

Really glad you got it sorted. The cars are capable of giving a really refined drive, and it sounds like you've rediscovered that :D

Thanks Johnny. My pal Dave always says “Fix what you know is wrong, and marvel at all the other stuff that ends up being fixed at the same time”. He’s not wrong.

I had a job on finding mounts so I worry about other owners being able to similarly cure their cars. Hopefully I’ll never need to do mine again but it’s a worry with these hard to find parts.

Onto the Montego this week. Carb rebuilt by a friend and ready to fit. Hoping for some turbo performance in the very near future!

Trouble with engine mounts is that they never get a rest. Almost worth considering putting
a jack under the engine when you know the car's going to be resting for an extended period,
like over winter.

The 1.4 engine mounts (gearbox end) are fiendishly complex and not amenable to swapping
an insert into, though someone, in Ukraine strangely, was offering a refurb service using cast
PU.

Really? Wow! You can’t imagine them making a fortune from the effort involved but that’s great news.

My friend in the village helped me with the mount change - it’s lovely talking with him - he had a 600hp Nissan GTR - it’s phenomenal. He spent the entire time telling me he envies me with my Rover and working out how he can fit one into his life! He wants a 130hp 3 door 216GTi because he’s a huge Honda engine fan. Think these are quite rare now. I do like the pre-grill cars myself and the 3 door is especially good looking.
