Battery not charging but alternator ok?

Post by Streetboy214GSi »

Hi, basically after driving the car ('92 214 gsi) the battery will go flat. However, if just left with the battery charged it will start after being left ages. So... I assume its a charging problem rather than a battery drain.

However, I've changed the alternator (twice- returned the first one!) but the problem remains

Oh, and I've tried various batteries!

Any ideas folks?

Any pointers much appreciated, I'm totally lost!

I have had this happen to me on a vehicle before, can't remember which one (old Timers disease), but it turned out to be the starter remained engaged when I fired up the car. Subsequentialy the starter ran on until I switched off, and if that was after a long journey the battery would be flat. Not having a reversed baseball cap in those days, or a ghetto blaster in the boot the noise from radio two was enough to cover the noise of the starter running, and when I stopped the engine everything appeared normal.
Might be worthwhile investigating.

Meaure the battery voltage with the engine running. It should be between 13.5 and 14.5 volts. If it is less then there is something wrong with the charging system somewhere.

If the voltage is correct tun on the headlamps and the heater and the heated rear screen. The voltage will now drop but should remain over 13v. If you rev the engine slightly the voltage should perk up to between 13.5 and 14.5 volts as before.

Does the battery light work correctly, i.e. on until the engine is started?
If not then it is possible that the pattery will not charge properly.

Check that the battery terminals are tight and in good condition. Also check that the battery cables are in good nick. Have you tried a NEW battery. Check that the boot light is going off.

Hiya, thanks guys

I've tried a battery from my dads 2.5 omega, a neighbours 5 series and a mates mondeo tdci- it would take a lot to persuade me to splash out on a new battery!

The boot light reminded me- the central locking randomly closes the locks when its running- could this be draining the battery?

I'll check the lights and voltage tomorrow.

Everyone tells me to just scrap it but I won't give in!

Thanks again
