HI,

I have a Rover 200 s reg and over the past few months i seem to be getting a weird howling/ rubbing noise while im driving my car i dont get it all the time and only seem to get it when i have drove my car over 20 miles a day Its very strange it sounds like a ghost howling i cant describe it. It only does it when i stay at a consitant speed and if i speed up change direction or break it stops until i am driving at a steady speed again. At first i thought it was near the drivers wheek but now it sounds like maybe its coming from under the bonet.

I want to take it to a garage but im abit worried they will have a field day with me as 1) im a girl and 2) i dont know much about cars.

So any clues about what you think it might be would be great.

It sounds like you need your front disc pads looked at. There is a metal strip on the brake pads that vibrates when it touches the disc, and it sounds like the wail of a banshee.

My first guess would be the Fan Belt, but that is just a guess. Is it at its worse when you first start her up in the morning? Oh oh hold on... it only starts happening after youve driven around 20 miles... hmmm

Mind you mind you, my mates Fiat's fan belt screech comes and goes as it pleases.

Sayin that my cam belt was starting to make a noise bout 18 months back which is why i got it replaced.

Does the noise happen when you have your foot down on teh clutch? Ok ok even if it is a silly guess, at least im trying

Does the car feel different to drive when the noise is there? Power stearing could be

I just got my dad to have a look at my car he thinks i need new pads although im not sure if having no pads could cause the howling?

Could be brake pads worn or even a wheel bearing. While changing the brake pads stick the wheel back on while the cars still up on stands/jack and wobble it top to bottom. It should be pretty solid, if you have movement, the wheel bearing is worn.

A WoooWoooWooo noise is usually a wheel bearing, and usually only happen at one constant speed (faster or slower and you don't really hear it).

Worn pads give a horrid metallic screech which you really can't miss!

Check the wheel bearings for play as described above. Chances are it'll be a rear bearing as these are usually the first to go. If you have rear discs then check that they aren't stuck as this causes the rear wheels to get very hot melting the grease out of the wheelbearings causing them to become noisey as they run dry.
