218 coupe vvc - rear brake pads renewal.
My rear pads are in need of replacement. So many nuts and bolts ...! Can anyone walk me through the procedure?
If you are not sure NEVER NEVER NEVER play with blrakes!
sorry to be patronising but it is something that matters life or death.
but firstly you need to use some rudermentory car maintaince b4 u even get to the pads like:
Use level ground pref not at road side.
use a good jack
crack wheel nuts first then raise vehicle and support with axle stand
the caliper only has 2 bolts holding it to the saddle 1 top 1 bottom just remove these bolts and with a bit of a push and maybe a tap the caliper will lift off.
Remove brake fluid resevoir top under bonnet.
only do 1 side at a time cos if u lose track of what u are doing u will have the other side in tact to use as a reference. clean the surfaces where the pads sit and any stainless shims there in then using a G Cramp or brake wind back tool push the caliper piston back till it stops. aplly a LITTLE copper slip to the pads where they sit on the saddle then slide the caliper itself over the pads and saddle replace top and bottom bolts don`t tighten them both up straight away make sure they have started in the threads then go from 1 to the other till both are TIGHT. pump foot brake first then hand brake wheel may bind alittle at first but should be able to turn by hand replace wheel and carry out same on other side

One slight correction to the above procedure, the pistons on the rear calipers screw in, there is a cross shape depression on the piston that you can get a long screwdriver or similar implement into to rotate it. If memory serves you'll need to rotate the piston clockwise to screw it in. One of the slots will also need to line up with the lug on the rear of the one pad to help you refit the caliper.

Did the brakes today prior to viewing your comments about the rotating piston and the need for the alignment. Blimey, those bolts were difficult to undo! After much huffing and cursing, I eventually worked out for myself that the pistons had to be rotated but what worries me is that business with the alignment ... 'One of the slots will also need to line up with the lug on the rear of the one pad to help you refit the caliper'. Everything went back together again and is working OK. Was I just lucky or could there be something that may not now be seating/working if those lugs etc were not lined up correctly?
