please please please help ive just got my rover 214 and i love it to bits but the dam thing keeps on over heating cos the fan isnt working and i dont know what to do

Hi Mark,
The first thing to do is to check the wires that feed the radiator temp sensor.
The sensor is 'plugged' into the rad so should be easy to identify.
If all is well there, the sensor itself could be duff, so it will be worth while changing it. your local motor factor should be able to supply a new one.
Check if the fan motor is ok, by first seeing if you can move the fan by hand (engine off obviously)
Also by 'shorting' out the wires to the temp sender you can check to see if power is getting to the fan and that all is ok.
Just temporarily join the two wires connected to the temp sender, if all is ok, the fan should come on with the ignition and stay on.
Another thing could be that the thermostat is stuck/duff, and is not opening, therefor the engine coolent gets hot without circulating through the rad etc.
I suppose the next thing to do would be to check on the head, first check to see if there is any 'ice cream' in, on or around the oil filler cap and apperture.
Also check the dipstick for the same thing.
If there is evidence of 'ice cream' on both the dipstick and the oil filler cap/apperture, than there is a good chance that your head gasket has gone.
after that, well I guess you can grab Dan or one of the other guys, as I wouldnt know what else.
