Return of SLEGTi

Post by roverman1 »

As some of you might know i sold my 216 sli about 3 years ago after about 10 years of ownership and since that time it has passed through many owners, most have looked after it but one or two maybe didn't didn't give it the respect it deserved.
Well just recently it took part in the Rat Rod rally to Romania where AR Online's Keith Adams went out to bring it back, you can start the read here http://www.aronline.co.uk/blogs/2011/09 ... m-romania/ .
To cut a long story short Alex 'wedge' took possesion of the car and after it arrived back from the rally it ended up in Devon in the capable hands of Alex.

Well after some major cleaning and servicing which it badly needed after it's mega mile trip, it looked very presentable indeed, and i looked on in envy :) wishing i had never sold it, well Alex had decided to trim his fleet of cars down he has decided to sell the 'SLEGTi'.
So i couldn't let it slip away this time, so in the next few weeks it will be making it's way back across the severn bridge to my home here in Swansea
All credit to Alex and Rob/b and many others who looked after it while it's been away and i'm sure Alex won't mind me reposting his thread here. http://roverhhr.info/viewtopic.php?f=4& ... eaf230a725 .
When i get it back home there will be more updates i'm sure.

Thanks for reading :)

Neil.

It's been a long time coming but my old Rover 216 sli A.K.A SLEGTi is finally back in my possesion. After selling it a decision i regreted within the first week, because in that first month the drive shaft was snapped and the car was then basically left to rot. But in stepped new owner Rob Bambridge who revived it and brought it back to dailey use. Iv'e been keeping track of it ever since.

During my ten years of ownership i made many changes including a full interior change from brown to a late black SEI spec and two engine changes the last change beinge being the Twin cam engine from a Mot failed 5 door Gti, plus the fitting of rear power windows and the much needed power steering.

Most recently of course it took part in the Rat Rod Rally in which a certain Mr Keith Adams decided to fly to Romania and bring it back to the UK, but as we all know that didn't go to plan all thanks to a missing manhole cover.

Also taking part on that same rally was Alex Sebbringer(Alex wedge) who was out there in Mongo the Montego, that car though decided that it didn't want to return to the UK, so it now lives in a scrapyard in central Europe. So long story short, Alex needed to get home to devon so after hitching a lift with Keith and co he ended up buying the rover to get home to devon, and so after giving it a full service which included all new brakes and then fitting it with new battery and alternator, and treeting it to a full valet and polish, Alex decided to sell, so that was when the opportunity for me to buy it back came about.

So the deal was done and the trip to devon was planned,so on mild Saturday in Decenber Myself and my brother made the not to long trip down the M5 to Alex's house, unfortunatlly Alex was unable to be there in person so we met up with his father Terry.

As i pulled into the gravel driveway there was the SLEGTi parked up and looking like i remembered it, i had not seen this car apart from pictures on line, for almost 3 years, and it was like seeing an old friend. After chatting a while with Mr Sebbringer snr he handed me the keys, as the door opened the familier smell of the half leather interior greeted me and sitting down into the SEI spec sport seats i turned the key in the ignition and the Twin cam Honda engine fired up immediately and settled to a idle without any fuss or strange noises, which is amazing considering the miles it had just covered going through Europe.

So after exchanging the formalities and signing on the dotted line the car was once again mine, and so the drive home back to Swansea was uneventfull and it didn't miss a beat. While the car is mechanically sound the body work has a few battle scars and some extrs rust bubbles here and there but nothing that can't be sorted with patience. So my plans are over the coming months to get those small issues sorted and basically use it and enjoy it

I gave the old Rover it's first wash today and considering what it's been through in the last 3 years or so, it has held up quite well.
It seem to be running a bit rich and the idle is not smooth, but as it's a non cat model the mixture can be altered on the ECU, so that should be a straight forward fix.
There are one or two rust bubbles that have popped up here and there but they are just cosmetic nothing structural, but they will need attention soon to stop them getting worse.

Just a few pics from today along side my HH-R.

That car was outstanding on the rally. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I never got to service it before we took it abroad for the road trip. All it had was a change or rear anti-roll bar drop links and a change of brake fluid. Thats it. In total, it did 5k miles in 6 weeks or something crazy like that. 4 and 5 up, it roared and slid and skidded across Europe and never used a drop of oil or water. My tale of the trip is on AROnline. Well considering what it has been through it's incredible it has lasted, i thought it would have been stripped of it's engine and interior by now, so i'm glad i could get it back, and in one piece, it puts lot's of newer cars to shame with it's speed.

Really l like this, reminds me of my old '90 214sli

Love the interior conversion too

A few questions though - how easy is the twin cam swap?

How is the airbag wheel fitted?

Thanks for the comments, the engine swap is simple it's no different that swapping like for like it's one out and one in, plug and play.
I did use the ecu from the Gti but it runs just as good with the single cam ecu.

The air gag wheel is a little more complicated, you'll need the steering column surround, and the complete air bag wheel including the clock spring device that sits behind the wheel, that is needed for the connection for the horn plus a small alteration to the horn wiring at the wheel.
If your used to working on these cars then it's straight forward really.

That's very useful info - it increases the availability of spares considerably :D

It goes without saying that everybody understands that this makes the horn work but not the airbag, doesn't it ? It's a bit more complicated to make one of those function correctly...

Saying that, has anybody actually done it ?
