Rover model overview

The 200 214si rover is my first step into Rovers. I don't know too much about the model range nor model history. Does there exist a short history of the rover 2n/2nn model line?

I have a 214si. It is a 5 door hatch but doesnt look like the sedan of other 214's I have seen pictures of. I have seen people refer to it as a 200 series 214. But there is also a 25, 200 and 216 which my car looks similar too. Is the model labelled "200" a 200 series 200? The si means 16valve injected - fine. Is there any model designation between 200 - 214si with K and Honda engines? What is the difference between 25, 214, 216? I have done a quick seach but not found an short description of the model range yet?

Further, The NAC corporation in China has bought rights to Rover (though not the name?). Is there any news about whether they will continue producing Rovers? and which models?

Wow there are a few hard to answer questions in there but I'll try.


There are 3 versions of the rover 200

The first (mk1) was square fronted and if you ever saw "keeping up appearances" then that was the car in it. It had headlights like the maestro and was the roverised version of the honda ballade I think. It had 1.3 honda engine or 1.6 Rover S series fuel injected engines I think.

The second (mk2), is the type shown in the banner pictures. Known as the wedge shape or the R8 (that was it's rover code name). It had a wide variety of engines fitted to it over the years (I'f I've missed any or got them wrong then please let me know and I'll ammend the list.

1.9 Pugoet XUD Diesel (NASP)
1.7 Pugoet XUD Diesel (Turbo)
1.4 Rover K series 8 valve carburettor
1.4 Rover K series 8 valve single point injection
1.4 Rover K series 16 valve multi point injection
1.8 Rover K series 16 valve VVC
1.6 Honda 16v Single cam - need to check this to be sure as I'm not up on the honda engines.
1.6 Honda 16v Twin-cam
2.0 Rover M series (NASP)
2.0 Rover T series (NASP)
2.0 Rover T series (Turbo)

The third (mk3) 200's are known as the bubbles due to their rounded shape or R3. They are essentially the same car as the 25 and ZR too.
They had the following engines
1.1 Rover K series 8V MPi
1.4 Rover K series MPi
1.6 Rover K series 16v MPi Auto and manual.
1.8 Rover K series 16v MPi
1.8 Rover K series VVC MPi
2.0 Rover L series Diesel (non-intercooled)
2.0 Rover L series Diesel (Intercooled)

In the R3's the 1.1 was only 8v fuel injection. The 1.4 came in 8v and 16v variants, giving two power level options. As for the autos, they used the CVT box, and they were definitely available on the 1.6's, not sure if they were used on the 1.4, definitely wasn't used on the 1.8 or the 1.1.

CVT was only on the 1.6 which was the only auto - so that sorts that one out!

I think all the r3 1.4's were 16v though and the 2 power outputs were created with a restricted throttle body giving 84ps and 103ps I think or something like that. I'm happy to be proved wrong though :D

Up until now I thought my R3 214si was available with a Honda engine but I now understand that only Rover engines were used on the R3 (bubble) shape.

Any rumours about whether the new owners if Rover (NAC) will continue the 200 - 214 model?

They did use the 8v 1.4 in the R3 and even in some late 1999 414's much to my suprise when wandering round a breakers looking for 16v bits!,dont quote me but i think the 1.4 8v mpi was around 78bhp?
Also i think the two states of tune for the 1.4 16v (84/103bhp) were only implemented when the 25 was introduced...
