216 TC AC removal and radiator replacement

Post by gofra »

Hello,

I decided to start working on my 216 GTI thats been parked down by the road for some time now. Plan was to take care of all the rust and do a major service. I also decided to completely remove the AC because I rarely need it and I meant to have this Rover as a fun car...now, the questions regarding the radiator:

- Radiator doesnt have the standard top cap to fill the coolant in - do you simply fill it through the expansion tank?
- The cells on the radiator seemed ok until I touched them - they literarly became dust so I need to replace it - given the fact AC condenser is in front of the radiator, do I have to watch out for anything? I removed both without problems...
- Do I keep the secondary fan on or do I remove it? (yellow one in the corner - I think its used by AC only?)

Now, the AC:

- I managed to took the compressor and all the pipings out of the engine bay - how about the electrical wiring? At first I thought I could simply take those wires out but it seems that the circuit is a bit more complex - could anyone give me guidance on how to do it properly?
- The compressor bracket seems rather large and I planned to take that off too - any second thoughts?
- using the same wiring loom - how are the fans for AC and radiator conected? Could I use the AC button to manually turn on the secondary fan when needed or would that mean too much work?

Many many thanx to anyone willing to help!

Best,

F

I imagine this R8 electrical manual will include aircon details, so will probably help on the electrical side. You should'nt really need to remove any of the wiring, just replace the switch for a blank and leave the connectors tucked away.

Many thanx for that! The reason I would like to know how the wiring goes is the fact AC uses quite a lot of wires + a separate relay/fuse box. Removing those would clean up the bay quite a bit!
