power steering?

Post by paul.mitchell84 »

Hi im new here, i dont own a rover yet but have been to look at one, my query is when the car (216 coupe) starts when steering it makes a whining noise and it gets really loud when full lock is on. however after approx 10 minutes it stops.

Any ideas what this could be?

Thanks

Paul

Going on past experience then I'm gonna say if only happens on one side then it may be your CV joint. If it happens on both sides then its possible its your differential. Dont fully take my word for it yet but it does sound like it.

I take it you've tried the obvious thing and checked the PAS fluid level?!

It could be that as the system warms up, the oil expands just enough to "fill" the pump, hence the noise disappearing?

*laughs*...mine has been doing that since I got it 3 years ago - always thought it'd be a lose belt or something similar. Reckon I'll check the PAS fluid level now though! :wink :clapping

NEVER hold a car on full lock. It applys forces to the rack and steering components (and PAS pump), that it was never designed to cope with. This is why they moan and groan when you hit full lock as essentially you have much more psressure int he hydraulics than at other times.

Check the PAS fluid level and check the belt isn't slipping. If it is apply some WD40 to the belt run whilst the engine is running (carefully). No I am being serious it helps soften the belt and preventing it slipping.

Apply WD40 to the fan belt?

I am guessing that was said as WD40 is a water dispersant, and belts tend to slip on wet days.

Yes apply WD40 to the belt. It helps to soften the rubber in the belt and so stops it slipping. I know it sounds slightly mad, but it works.

well, I've topped up the PAS fluid - it was on the low line mark! It feels a bit better in general but still squeals when turning the wheel whilst still, or moving slowly! Got a week off so gonna WD40 the belt as recommended: see if that helps any?! :) :S :tumbleweed

Cheers

dont know if this helps but my power steering used to make a loud whinning noise and when i sprayed grease or wd40 the sound would temporarily dissappear. i found out in the end that some oil leaked in to the bearings of the pump and dried them out so i replace the pump and the sound was gone.
