Check that the alternator belt is tight enough to stop it slipping. (when the steering is put onto full lock the pump is under more load so it puts more load on the belt and so can make it slip)

You want it tight but not too tight as that will quickly knacker the bearings in the alternator

just done the WD40 thing, and it's done the trick! :) Spoken to a mechanic as well and he reckons new belt should only be about a fiver, so when the squeak comes back I'll look into a new belt me thinks :closedeyes
