Clutch Slipping

Post by mike2007 »

Hi

I have a rover 214 sei(old shape), basically the clutch keeps sleeping and i have to keep pulling away really slowly. my first thoughts was that it needs a new clutch however it doesnt happen 100 percent of the time. it happens randomly sometimes i can pull away as quick as i want. my friend mentioned to me something about an oil leak.

i was just wandering if anyone has had this problem before and could share there thoughts on it.

Thanks

Michael

If it slips, it almost certainly needs changing. It's either contaminated or worn. You might have an oil seal gone, but that will mean taking the gearbox off, so you might as well do the clutch at the same time anyway. A seal shouldn't really add much time or cost to the job of replacing the clutch.

Worth checking first is that the clutch arm or cable isn't snagging/frayed. Otherwise it could be oil on the clutch plate from a leaking input shaft bearing (these are the bearings that usually go on the gearbox)

Just take it to a garage - a Rover specialists if there is one near you - not a dealer. If you're keeping the car, get it done.
I had a new clutch on one of my SEi's earlier this year (57k miles) - good as new now and lovely to drive. I paid £200 but money well spent IMHO.

I paid £325 for mine to be done on my 218 SLD turbo diesel - complete rip-off! Didn't pay it until I'd loudly voiced my opinions and let them know that I would NOT be returning!! :-D

Where was that? I could name quite a few cheaper places in the area I'm sure.

Place in Bradway. It was abank holiday weekend and I was going on holiday on the Wednesday - I had my car collected late on the Saturday so there was only one day to get the work done!...which is why I had to get it to anywhere I could! :( I found much cheaper, but they could only fit it in when I was meant to be on holiday. These guys quoted £256 Inc VAT. then think they hanged their minds so that that quote didn't include VAT. I was very very annoyed and told them that I wouldn't be using them ever again!!

'Mr Clutch' had quoted £175 inc. VAT which was my best quote.
