Steering rack ratio

Post by Trouble »

Hi,

Does anyone know (or mind measuring) the steering rack ratio (deg/mm) of the MG ZR steering rack? After another crash during a targa rally, I now need to replace the rack in my 214, and would like a quicker ratio if one exists... Specs state that the MG rack has a reduced lock to lock value, but is this due to a different ratio, or just a limited travel?? I suspect the later...?

Also, are the ZR hubs and struts the same (other than differences in brakes/brake caliper mountings)?

Cheers for any light that can be generated on this

...also, is there anyone breaking for spares a Rover 200/400/coupe/MG ZR near to Leicester? I need the bumper, bonnet, slam panel, both front suspension subframes, steering rack and maybe front suspension... I can remove these parts if that brings the cost down?

Cheers

Pretty sure it's restricted lock nothing else, to allow wider section tyres to be fitted to the MGs.

Later cars had a different gear fitted with the PAS valuing above the rack rather than below it. They have a different tear subframe with a bigger hole in it for the valve and pinion. Early R3s take the carry over R8 steering gear but with new hoses.

Check carefully so you know which ones you've got :)
I like Twin Cams, Single Cams, Turbos and 5-cam VVCs :cool

Excellent info, thanks John. Looks like I need to find an R8 for breaking then... It must be a couple of years now since I've seen one at my local breakers... :(

It was the wethersfield targa, back in Novemebr - 3 weeks after I had restored/resprayed it! *laughs* I used to use it for endurance rallying nearly 10 years ago
