Hi from a serial Cabby 216 Owner (2:-)

Post by Robsee »

Hello folks just a few words of introduction.

I bought a 1993 L plated 216 cabby in polynesian turquoise about 10 years ago. It belonged to a neighbour and I always admired it standing in our street. I used a van for my work and for private transport as well at the time but then I gave up the work requiring a van. That occurred at about the same time that the neighbour was selling the car and the rest is history as they say.

Anyway, the car was in great condition and the missus and I really enjoyed the car especially with the roof down in the nice weather. It had the excellent honda DOHC engine which was sprightly, quite economical and trouble free whilst we had it. One thing I had not experienced before on a vehicle was how excellent the steering was. We had it for about 4 years then sadly the cam belt came off after the bearing in the tensioner collapsed. :sad

After our experience with the L plate cabby I bought the one I have now, please see my sig. Obviously, the big difference with the one I have now is it came with the Rover engine which is not as good as the Honda in my humble opinion. Never the less it was and still is in excellent condition, with to date, just shy of 72k genuine miles on the clock. It is not a hobby car and I do need transport so my challenge now is finding parts for it. That is the only reason I would probably not consider buying another. However, my missus and I like the car so much we would like to keep it on the road as long as possible.

If you got this far thanks for your time to read my story of how I became a cabby 216 fan :thumbup1

Nearly every part is still available if you know where to look. Your first good move was coming here, we know where the parts are!

:welcome

Split opinion on engines :wink3

Both types can go wrong, especially after 25 years but if looked after well they'll both keep going and be fun whilst doing so!

Glad you like the steering :D
I like Twin Cams.... and Single Cams...and now Turbos

Thanks for your post 1234dist, that is great news.

I've posted on the Parts for Sale & Wanted section of the board. One pic over there of the part required but will get to work on posting a pic of "Scarlet" (as the other half likes to call her) soon.

Oh... I see, the revolutionary Long Bolt Engine as it was affectionately known. I could easily become a convert. :D

Cheers

Engines, horses for courses I suppose. I'm no expert on engines, far from it but I always thought there was more umph in the Honda and if I recall correctly the fuel economy was better.

Steering, funnily, I was quite upset shortly after buying the later model as the steering was n't as good as with the earlier one. Got used to it now and it is as if there was never an issue, strange. Thanks for your post BTW

Found a couple of pics from a couple of years ago to be going on with. Still in about the same condition except for a bit of delamination on the nearside upper quarter panel. I heard it occurs because of bad preparation before being sprayed at the factory. If that's the case its taken about 18 years to manifest itself!! Unless it has been resprayed since new, which I can see no evidence of.

She's in need of a bit of a clean inside and out at the moment so will get some more up to date pics up once I've had time to clean her up.

Well documented, is that the delamination you're referring too.

They say that coz red is an aggressive colour viewing it increases the blood pressure slightly! Probably accounts for the fact that me and the missus nearly always start off our journies with a blazing row :D Did n't seem to happen with the Polynesian turquoise one, we both seemed to end up singing. Mind you, the grass skirt got a bit itchy around the crotch after a few miles. :)
