droning noise????

Post by pkronic »

hi so i keep hearing this droning noice never happens when the engine is running and it happens randomly so no way of recording the sound the ignition dont have to be on i mean damn it makes the noise when the cars all locked up, i dont appear to be losing fuel but not sure if for some reason the fuel pump is priming, or if it has a pressure release valve thats going off or if its something else, the sound appears to be coming from the back end of the car and lasts about 10seconds ish

the car:
1992 rover 214 sli single point injection

its no problem just really curious whats going on

If it's like a mooing sound, like don't worry. Sounds like its from the rear bumper area? Sometimes It's a long, loud moo, other times a little honk. Temperature seems to affect this too.

If it is, It's the tank breather valve. It's perfectly OK, mine has mooed since I owned it, so presumably it's whole life! I like it now, almost charming. Rover did a recall for this, but obviously Rover don't exist now.

coud possibly be, me n dad thought it was the fuel pump priming which would suggest pressure leak as it never happens when engine is running

The tank is I believe maintained at a certain pressure, the breather valve regulates it AFAIK regarding this strange system. Fuel pump is essentially silent on mine, never hear it and works just fine. Also mine doesn't seem to moo when running, just when parked up. Sounds like a mechanical cow. At first I wondered if it was a central locking fault! Kept checking the car, then heard it from the bumper area, and sure enough if you look at diagrams that's where the breather is.

It is the cars way of greeting you. Our pair talk to you too - certain it is the tank breather nothing to worry about but took a long time to get used to. Means the cars are in use and ready to go. Long may they keep mooing!

It was a problem that couldn't easily be fixed so it wasn't - it just makes our cars even more special and loveable :laughing2

My cat likes to sit on the warm rocker cover while I work on it :D he's a cute sod. Perhaps he sees her as a companion and enjoys her moo's. He never even scratches cars... He usually sleeps in my dad's Subaru's bonnet scoop.
