Rover 216 Cabriolet 1998 Fuel Pump Relay
Good Afternoon All - unlike previous weekends, today the cabriolet hood is definitely up!
A couple of weekends ago my 1998 216 Cabriolet stalled (very unusual) but restarted on trip to Lincoln, 10miles away, on a very hot day. On the way home the car stalled and would not re-start (unheard of). We suspected fuel pump problems as, when the ignition was turned on, there was no hum of the electrical system initialising. Before the towing bogie ride home the Green Flag technician found kick in the battery and fuel as far as the injection system but no apparent spark. Secretary Duncan, whom we had contacted re letting the car go, thinks fuel pump relay the more likely culprit. But neither Mr Haynes' manual nor any diagram accessed on the web shows me where the fuel pump relay is, or what identification markings it should carry. Frustratingly, I have another '98 216 fuel pump relay from eBay just waiting to be installed!
Thanks for any help and kind regards, Peter Felts, Collingham, Notts

There is an article in the July 17 edition of The Viking that may well help you. You can download it from the members area of the website.

Hi,
Being a 98 I assume you have a K Series. If there's no spark it could be the Rotor Arm, there is a resistor in it that fails.
Mine was missing for weeks, I blamed dirty fuel. I ground to a halt one evening, got the Wife to tow me home, and after the usual checks it turned out to be the £5 Rotor Arm.
Needless to say I now carry a spare with me in the boot.

Re: Rover 216 Cabriolet 1998 Fuel Pump Relay
When I suggested the relay as the problem I was thinking it was a Honda engine, but it's not, it's a K-series, so the Viking article is not going to help on this occasion. This car is also an automatic. According to the HWM the fuel pump relay is part of the Main relay on the K-Series as well, but I don't know where it is located.
Peter - sorry for any confusion I have inadvertently caused.

Yes, Duncan is correct. The article is about the main relay for the Honda engine.

Would also suggest this. Had it happen to me on an old Saab 900. Changed a few things but never this as seemed fine.Kriss707 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 29, 2018 4:09 pm Hi,

Ended up with a £100 bill from the garage, with the rotor arm as the issue.
Anything spark related I always try dizzy cap and rotor arm first.

Most likley the rotor arm one of my K series engined seems to go through them I can only assume the are of a poorer quality than the originals.Starts by the occasional misfire under load and gradualy develops and eventually engine cuts out and won't re start.

Re: Rover 216 Cabriolet 1998 Fuel Pump Relay
Please remember that in Peter's original post he says that there is a noticeable absence of the hum of the electrical system initialising - by which, I presume, we are talking about the fuel pump priming. So, although it may be some other part of the ignition system that is failing, we my also be barking up the wrong tree.
Please does anyone know where the main relay is situated so that Peter can at least swap in the new one to see if it solves the problem? I have 4 different Haynes manuals and none of them seem to cover this variant of the marque. Is it one of the 2 yellow relays on the passenger side of the engine compartment about half way back?

The relay is in the main engine bay fuse box (the wedgy one).
