Wooden Gear Knob
Are there any wooden gear knobs available that will fit the R8? I’d like to upgrade.
There’s a few 75 ones on eBay but they are a push fit not screw fit.

Not as standard, i.e. a Rover original, as far as I know. Maybe there are some Rover 45 ones that are screw-on?Paul_1978_yorks wrote: ↑Wed Jan 23, 2019 11:36 pm Are there any wooden gear knobs available that will fit the R8? I’d like to upgrade.

Otherwise go onto your favourite mass-selling website (Ebay or Amazon) and have a search using this thread title. There are some nice-looking alternatives out there.
I've got one of those wood-effect vinyl steering wheel covers - black grippy vinyl and three sections in a burr-walnut effect. Not as convincing as a real wooden wheel like the 75, but at a glance it looks like one. I quite like the look and it makes the wheel feel chunky. Had thought about finding a wooden gear knob to match.
You'll be swapping the heater facia for a R25 wooden one if you follow the wood theme to its natural conclusion. That looks nice too. Pity the wood-effect air vent surrounds from a 25 (or a range rover!) won't fit...

Re: Wooden Gear Knob
If you can get one from a 75 quite cheaply, it could probably be modified with some resin or a threaded insert to allow it to screw on to the R8 gear stick.
Or get a gear stick from a late 25, ZR or Streetwise (1.8 or diesel, therefore uses the PG1 gearbox and associated linkage) with the push fit knob and see if the 75 knob will fit that

Re: Wooden Gear Knob
Thanks chaps - good shout John about the wooden heater surround.
Modifying the 75 insert to fit on the gear stick thread sounds like a good idea

Re: Wooden Gear Knob
Here you go Paul - expensive but might be the right thing. 3 interchangeable inserts and definitely wooden. Says "for Skoda only" but that can't be true...Paul_1978_yorks wrote: ↑Thu Jan 24, 2019 11:22 pm Thanks chaps - good shout John about the wooden heater surround.

Much cheaper version here:

(not sure if it has the correct top markings showing the gear locations or if it has any top markings at all, but it clearly has a set of inserts with it).
Probably a case of determining the thread on the top the the gear stick. It'll be somewhere between M-8 and M12 and *probably* standard coarse thread pitch. If you can confirm that, it'll help with the shopping for a suitable insert.
One problem might be the outer diameter of any insert you can buy that has the correct internal thread. I guess the slimmest insert you could make would be to find the right diameter of helicoil and glue that in - by definition these have a slim OD for any given thread ID.

Re: Wooden Gear Knob
If sticking a push fit gear knob on a screw fitting, you my find that the push fit one is tight enough to cut its own thread as you turn it.
Alternatively, I'd be thinking of Araldite epoxy or even the dreaded (but only semi-permanent) silicon sealant

Re: Wooden Gear Knob
Araldite would be a no-no if you thought the gaiter might need replacement at some stage, or the linkage dropped for a refurb.

Re: Wooden Gear Knob
Just use enough to hold it -it won't require much
