CANCELLED! The Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show, with Discovery: NEC Birmingham. 7th to 9th August 2020

Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show, with Discovery.
NEC Birmingham. Friday 27 to Sunday 29 March 2020

Postponed until 7 - 9 August 2020 due to COVID-19 lockdown.

Now cancelled altogether (as announced on 27/5/2020)

So, as already mentioned elsewhere on the forum, in the Viking and on our social media platforms, we have been granted a generously-sized stand in Hall 5 for this year's 'Restoration Show'

Having given plenty of emphasis to the SD3 and R8 200 series for their respective anniversaries last year, now it is the turn of the R8 400 saloon plus the HH/R 400 series AND the R3 200 series to be promoted as each of these ranges will celebrate an anniversary in 2020.

We already have a one-owner 400 hatchback promised for the show (and this one doesn't actually need much in the way of restoration at all!) and we would now like to add an R8 400 saloon and an R3 200 hatchback. (25s and 45s may also be suitable, as these have a 20th anniversary this year!)

Cars need to be provided by a paid-up club member (there's still time to join :wink3 ) and should be in need of a little TLC. Ideally, the cars should be road legal so that they can be driven to and from the show although this is not essential. It is just a lot of extra work and waiting around to get trailers in and out of the hall for loading. Especially after the show closes on Sunday night!
We do have some limitations on what can be done on the stand, so no welding, grinding, paint spraying (except aerosols) and no procedures that risk flooding the NEC floors with various fluids...… The jobs should also be of a nature that will allow the car to start first time and drive out of the hall at the end of the show.

Examples of what we have done in the past include electrical work, engine bay detailing (perhaps changing rusty bolts and brackets for new ones), brake strip + clean + reassemble + adjust, suspension upgrades, headlining retrim, swap tatty body panels for better ones. Think of it as your own personal workshop for the weekend :laughing2

We will also welcome any club members who are willing to help on the stand during show hours: a limited number of free tickets will be available. You can either get involved in the practical work going on, or talk enthusiastically to visitors about our Club and all things Rover :) And you will still have time to look around the show as well.

Please post below with offers of cars or help.

As we emailed I’m happy to offer up my 200 BRM as a “restored” example should it be needed-I can always detail the engine bay and underside! :D Happy to also do bits like a brake strip & clean on it. Also happy to help out on the stand and talk general Rover-ness to scare the public away. :angel

Alternatively, my partner’s Streetwise VVC is due cambelts in April-I’m happy to bring that car and do these at the show.

No car to offer but a pair of hands. Very local so could bring equipment such as trolley jack axle stands, ramps etc.
Plus if we have electric I have an unwanted gift of a Tassimo that the club can have for beverages.
I can be available for all 4 days or a combination depending on other offers

Having read the list of what would be wanted at the show due to the anniversaries I will say although I don't have any of the above, I will gladly bring along Murf the R8 216 if there is a suitable space.

Would be great to meet some other club members too!

I have a 1991 416 GTI automatic which I've owned since 1997. It's Flame Red with 140K miles so the paint work has suffered a bit on the roof , bonnet and boot not only from the mileage but also after being stored under a cover for a number of years at the bottom of a garden. Not sure if the paint work is beyond repair over a weekend . Planned to get it resprayed in the coming few years but currently working through the mechanical side. Currently just got the camshaft cover back from power coating but will have that refitted in the next couple of weeks so it will be mobile after that.

All pairs of hands welcome :clapping And if we can scrounge some electricity, the coffee machine sounds like a great idea too!

Plodder........I like the sound of your 416: could it be made available for the show in return for our best efforts at reviving the paint? We also do a very good grey plastic bumper renovation service!

Iain.........If we have enough room, your Streetwise offer may also be very useful to us: I will be in touch soon.

I don't see a problem you having my 416 for the show. Happy if you find another deserving vehicle.
I will turn down the grey bumper offer thanks as the bumpers are coloured the same as the car. There is a picture of it on your events photo at the 2017 BL show at Milton Keynes. (Photo 6 I think) . I don't have a Flickr account but I can create one if you need more pictures.

Well, that's a "Yes Please" from me!

If you would contact me by email, we can discuss the finer detail of getting things sorted. My email address is on the contacts page of The Viking.

Thanks

Paul
