You might be right - I've not actually seen a factory installation :laughing2

They went under the seat on R8, so I assumed that's where it would go on R3. My cable wouldn't stretch all the way to the boot either...

The 'bent tin' looks suspiciously like a pair of domestic radiator brackets :laughing2

Nice neat transformation into something far more useful!

I don't remember any R3 having an underseat CD changer installation (every one I have seen is on the left hand side of the boot), but under the passenger's seat is a far more logical place. At least you can change the discs without parking up and opening the boot. All you need now is the Coupe centre armrest with storage for your CD cases. :wink3

Confirmation from the Rover Engineer who designed the autochanger installation in R3
Pretty similar to how we installed it originally, although we had the luxury of a Prototype Build department to make the brackets for us.

I remember pointing out to the old Vehicle Line people that an under-seat installation was more convenient than sticking it in the boot, as the driver could change CDs without having to get out of the car. Also it was much easier to route the cables to the back of the head unit, so it made my job easier.

I remember driving a white 400 (J82 TUK I think) all round Canley site with various senior managers in the passenger seat to demonstrate that the CD didn't jump when we went over the speed bumps.

I took advantage of the gap between the unbearably hot and very wet days to finally fit the Alpine S-S65C front speakers to the VI.

This meant fabricating a set of mounts for the 6.5"main speakers from a pair of old R3 speakers

I also 'cored out' a pair of tweeter mounts and was able to screw the new tweeters into the resulting holes.

The new one is at the bottom...

they went in well and sound very good :D

I made up a short adaptor harness so that it's totally reversible, if needed.

The finished article

Sad I know but I don't permit any CDs in my car that were issued after the car was registered!! It amuses any first time passengers and infuriates the wife.......so double reward!
