That subframe has seen some serious loading over the years to crack like that :o

Has anyone seen them cracking on road cars?

They usually rust first...
I like Twin Cams.... and Single Cams...and now Turbos

The white 220 GSI I just forget who owns it, failed MOT on a subframe crack last year.

Like I think it depends on the model, and where they live like mine has no rust

I’ve known a few road cars over the years that suffer with this problem too, Mainly 220’s with the heavy T16 engine.

I’ve never checked my FDH, and this has made me paranoid now :blink

So with all the welding now finished and engine bay strengthened, it was time to start putting things back together.

I had the subframes and ARB powder coated in gloss back (I'm boring with my colour choices I know :laughing2 ) and stripped down the front hubs for sand blasting.

I then made a start on painting the engine bay myself with some heavy duty chassis paint in gloss white. It was applied with a brush and surprisingly the finish is quite good, no brush marks anywhere and very durable stuff hence its name. The top section of the slam panel hasn't yet been painted for a reason, this will be cut out and a removable panel fabricated in its place. The purpose of this on a race car is to help with time & ease.......removing/refitting components in the engine bay during a race etc.

The Roversport cars are fitted with rose-jointed lower arms, so all other rubber bushes are going to be replaced/rebuilt with polyurethane bushes - drop links, tie rods and ARB

And then back on the car along with the suspension I'm going to use - GAZ GHA Coilovers.

My focus is to get the car back on four wheels ASAP, but you may have seen from the pictures the interior?

Because this is a road chassis, the inside of the car also needed work doing. This is how it looked.

Then it was time to start removing the sound deadening off the floor pan, remove the dashboard and roll cage from the car.

Then some more strengthening added to the chassis along the floor and bulkhead.

And then I purchased a pair of subframes, bucket seat and harness ready. The inside of the car will also be painted before everything is refitted.

Small update

- Hubs painted & new wheel bearings pressed in.
- New track rod ends fitted
- Re-movable front slam panel (top section) made as per the Roversport cars.

And then back on four wheels :cool

I won't be fitting the engine just yet, I plan on getting the inside of the car put back together next.

You’ve assembled the front suspension without fitting the drive shafts. Are you not going to need to take all that apart again come fitting time?

Yes you are right, I Didnt want to fit driveshafts at this stage because I’m still a while off from getting the engine fitted and car drivable. At least now it’s back on four wheels, it can be pushed around the warehouse if needed.
