Rover 214si 6 year SORN

Post by TheOxo »

I’ve just bought a 1991 Rover 214si.
The sole owner had it garages for the last 6 years and it’s only done 24,000 miles.
When I drove it home, there was some smoke, I think from the front brakes. It seems ok now.
More broadly, what should we get replaced. Do we need to do all the belts?
New discs?

Many thanks

:welcome

Personally I would have trailered it home :laughing

Definitely belts and pulleys, water pump etc. New discs and pads all round. Coolant probably. The obvious like oil and filter and even gearbox oil I reckon.

Good luck and def post some pics when you get a chance :wink3

As above, all the basics for a recommission.
Anything rubber, anything fluid, anything electrical consumable.

Yep, as above.

I would take a good look at all the "rubber" bushings, wheels and the steering rack gaitors.

Would be useful to make a comprehensive check list and then work through it.

Like when I'm planning the restoration of mine, I have made a checklist of definite things to do e.g. fluids, belt, brakes, electrics.

Have you had to put a lot of hard work into becoming this lucky?

Feeling v lucky :) It’s for my son as a first car. He hates new cars. We never thought we’d end up with something like this. Ex-policeman owner who bought it for retirement.

Thanks for all the advice. I’ve found a local classic car specialist who is doing the do. He says it’s in amazing condition. It had already sailed through the MOT, no advisories.

Just need to get a few scratches sorted and the boy will be good to go (with an insurance black box!)

On that note, do the classic car insurers do cover for 17-year-old drivers?

I've never tried but i would doubt it. They normally restrict your annual mileage too

I can't remember which company it was, but I did hear a while ago that there was a company who would cover young drivers on a classic policy if another family member already had a classic insured with them.
I guess they are trying to encourage those who have a genuine interest in classic vehicles rather than just giving cheap insurance to a young driver who wants to run an old car into the ground on a shoestring budget or carry out 'inappropriate' modifications to it.
