Front discs

Post by 216GSi »

Sooooo, what causes brake discs to warp? My GTi had warped discs when I got it in January, despite them only being a few months old. I had the discs and pads changed in Feb, only for them to warp again in April. Am I right in thinking that there has to be a underlying problem?
Cheers for any input...

Usually excessive braking resulting in too much heat, causing the disks to warp.

Nope - been driving for 16 years now (ouch!) and have never ever warped discs before. Could it be something out of alignment, like calipers or something?

It could also be a defect in the casting - often that only shows up as the discs wear.

Rust between the hub and disc can give the appearance of warping by throwing the disc off centre.

My 214 has solid front discs and these are prone to warping due to excessive heat build up. I had problems with a pair of cheap OE quoted replacement items fitted two years ago, they only lasted a year and had to be replaced, since then I've fitted good quality Unipart items and I've not had any trouble. I guess quality is like anything, you get what you pay for.

The discs on mine are the originals.
Having said that, I've noticed a difference in brake fade on this one, in comparison to my previous GSi. Having discs all round doesn't feel so responsive. Perhaps I need to look more closely.... :S
There's a lot to be said for trying drilled and grooved discs....and a decent spoiler!
The standard prod item we've both got does little to aid cooling.
R8 Man is spot on...it's worth buying a good brand disc. Never used more than standard brand shoes/pads-like Ferodo. I expect 25-30k from a set of pads.
As much as it might sound critical, Owen makes a valid point. Using the gears and progressive braking also helps to keep discs cooler.
Hope you find my input useful.
Now....if anyone knows of a decent Roversport spoiler for sale....please let me know!

Make sure your hub is really clean when you put the discs on. We had this problem a couple of years ago.

Trev I'm pretty sure the reason your discs are warped relates to the knackered driveshafts that were on it when the brake discs were renewed. Basically, if you warped them (even ever so slightly) when the driveshaft was bent then the warping will have emphasised itself with use even if now the driveshafts have been sorted.

When replacing the discs make sure the hub/disc interface is spotlessly clean. Any rust or dirt trapped in here when you replace the disc causes them to "warp" quite quickly.
