R8 bonnet won't close properly

Post by henryiett »

Hi, just giving my r8 and inspection look through and I realised the bonnet isn't shuttling properly. The lock engages fine, but you can see the bonnet is higher than the front wings

Push the handle back to make sure it’s sat where it should be in the cab.

Grease with a spray grease your bonnet lock and make sure everything moves freely checking with a screw driver that the catch is working correctly.

If it doesn’t catch on the screw driver you will more than likely need a new bonnet lock of which the rover 45 one seems to be the most common.

If I send it up to you later in the year, that's something else on the the to do list for restoration

How high are the rubber buffers at the front corners?
These screw in and out to adjust bonnet seating height.

Idk, but I don't see why it should change, the car hasn't moved since 2002 and not touched much. Once I've learned to drive, I intend to get it back into working order. And use it but it depends what RR says when/if I do it

If the car ain't moved for a few years the bonnet catch mechanism tends to seize/stiffen (rust) up.

Just remove it (3x10mm bolts) & oil & work the mechanism until it frees itself up.

I had to do one on a car that had sat for 7 years, it needed to be clamped in a vice, oiled & hammered 😂😂😂😂..... Works fine now 😁😁

That's the thing, the actual mechanism is totally free the bonnet just won't go down into its fully closed position. I think it's best just to leave it and get it done when the car is restored

This might sound a little ridiculous, but you didn't leave anything on top of the engine, or something in the engine compartment that's actually impeding the bonnet from closing properly (like a torch, or something), did you? Otherwise, perhaps you just need to drop it from a greater height.

No me neither!!! , who would ever dream of doing something that silly. :blushing
It’s when you look once and don’t see the tool lying in the most obvious place , try shutting it again and only on the next look do you see the large screwdriver on top of the suspension turret. :cursing :slapme
