Honda Engine Misfire.

Post by Norman2CV »

Some advice needed please. Curiosity has got the better of me and I have started investigating the misfire on my 216 .
It starts instantly from cold but is lumpy in the low rev range but clears higher up until it warms then it gets worse and eventually stalls and can be hard to re start, with the odd 'cough', until it goes cold then starts instantly again.
On my older classics i would say ignition fault, coil or condenser, but this is where I am confused.
Research online tells me this car has a thing called an ignitor and or a coil. Could someone please tell me what and where this is, and does it have a coil too ? Do the symptoms indicate that these or this could be a problem and where else should i investigate ?
I appreciate any advice as id love to get the engine running smooth and sweet :)

Both the coil (black part on right, below) and the ignitor (thin silver part on left) are inside the coil and can cause these problems

But so can the fuel pump relay inside the car

The soldered joints on the back of the PCB dry out over time but the good news is that they're fairly easy to re-solder, which fixes it for the next 10~20 years!

It's probably a good idea for any owner with a D-series to keep one of each of these 3 as handy spares, as they'll all fail eventually :cool
I like Twin Cams.... and Single Cams...and now Turbos

Don't discount the possibility that the rotor arm is shorting out as it warms up. This is surprisingly common and particularly affected black rotor arms produced 15-20 years ago. Cheap and easy to swap
