Re: Rover 214 SEi Project
Thanks mate. Really pleased with it. Or I will be once a couple of scabby areas are treated.

'Delete badge option' was available free of charge in the mid 1990s it was the time when company car drivers were on a constant quest for one-upmanship and if one did not have the top of the range model, de-badging was the easy way to cover it up

Re: Rover 214 SEi Project
Only really been using the car properly in the last few days. Yesterday I found the new battery was dead.
I took it off the car and charged it up to about 12v. I then jump started the car, and checked the charge which was still showing 12v - so I presume the alternator is not working (and it does seem suspiciously noisy).
I checked the slam panel earth and battery leads to the alternator etc, and all looking in good order.
No battery light on the dash, but would my alternator diagnosis seem to be correct?

Re: Rover 214 SEi Project
I would agree with you on that one, Paul.
It is probably leaking through the rectifier when the engine is not running.
To confirm diagnosis if you want to, unplug the alternator, reconnect the battery and leave it for a few days.

Re: Rover 214 SEi Project
You could compare the battery drain (ignition off) with the alternator both in circuit and unplugged, to get a pointer towards an internal short.
Additionally if there was a 'hot electrics' aroma when the engine was driving the alternator, that also would suggest an internal fault such as a shorted diode in the rectifier.
Spare rectifiers are easily come by.

Re: Rover 214 SEi Project
I think I am just going to swap the alternator and have a go at doing it myself. Never swapped one before. Anything to look out for?

Plenty of releasing agent on the adjuster bolt below the alternator!Paul_1978_yorks wrote: ↑Thu Aug 13, 2020 10:43 pm I think I am just going to swap the alternator and have a go at doing it myself. Never swapped one before. Anything to look out for?
