is this because its actually an orange screen?

The light is clear and the clock has an orange filter so it looks orange. When the light is out (or broken) you can see the digits faintly. When the light is on the digits allow the light to shine through the filter and thus appear orange.

There is a orange polarising filter in the clock unit I seem to recall. I think you can change it if you are careful and clever.

sweet.. cos illuminated blue and changing every other light on the dash to illuminate blue would look absolutely mint. although.. what colour does an mg zr dash light up? cos i've seen a 214 wedge on ebay once with a zr dash... which looked mint.. and yes it did line up perfectly with the doorcards... this is a future mod i am considering.

Is there actually a way to access the bulb without breaking the wood in front of it?

I asked neally the exact same question some time ago. I think it was Clive that told me that all you do is get a flat head screw driver, starting from the left and carefully unclipping the woody looking part. :)

Yes that is what Dan did earlier in the car park of the motorfactors.
