Thanks for the information but it doesn't tell me anything more than I already know. I know what the letter positions all mean, that's consistent for all models from 89-99, the issue is what the class, bodystyle, engine and transmission letters all decode to for pre-92 cars.
I've reverse engineered what I can, to decode the details for the data I have from the DVLA which is fine for this exercise, but I've not idea if what I've reverse engineered is actually complete because there could be some extinct models that wouldn't show up in the DVLA data.

Did you note the extant, but SORN VIN of my own car on the bottom line? As it's a variant
which hasn't made it into your summary table yet!

If your car isn't captured there it's likely your's is one of the several hundred cars I'm struggling to parse for any of a number of reasons, but I'll take a look tomorrow and see if I can find it.

Done a bit more work to decode the VINs. Got a much better undertanding of the pre-92 VIN decoding schema now, having reverse engineered from the data I have.
I've still got a good few hundred cars I still haven't properly decoded the VINs for one reason or another, but here is the list as it current stands broken down by model.
Code: Select all
DecodedModel TAXED SORN UNTAXED UNKNOWN
214 Cabriolet 16 62 2 8
214i 170 487 64 269
214Si 39 115 14 27
216 Cabriolet 247 633 63 170
216 Coupe 124 406 33 68
216GTi 110 163 34 133
216GTi Twin Cam 0 6 0 0
216SLi 24 61 6 26
218 VVC Coupe 48 200 11 23
218SD 6 53 5 23
218SD Turbo 18 122 8 35
218SLD Turbo 1 1 0 0
220 Coupe 31 181 16 21
220 Coupe Turbo 60 263 18 11
220GSi Turbo 3 33 2 1
220GTi 14 62 6 5
220GTi Turbo 4 22 0 1
220Si 18 63 3 11
414Si 67 174 26 79
414SLi 4 37 1 5
416 Tourer 32 92 14 30
416GTi 3 3 0 0
416Si 186 384 72 181
418SD 0 11 1 0
418SD Turbo 38 174 17 75
418SLD 3 11 2 3
418SLD Turbo 5 50 1 13
420GSi Sport Turbo 3 23 3 0
420GSi Turbo 0 9 0 1
420Si 22 74 4 18
The above table doesn't currently make a distinction between 3/5dr 200 variants and likewise for saloon/tourer variants of the 400. The 216's also currently cover both the D-series and K-series and I still need to do a bit more research to make sure I've got the correct crossover point to make a determination between 420 GSi Turbos and Sport Turbos.
Watch this space for more updates.
I see no 220 Gsi

I did wonder how long it would take someone to notice that. I spotted it not long after I posted the table while further refining the data.
I'm now at the point where I have successfully parsed all of the data except for 23 vehicles due to completely garbled VINs, plus three of those cars turned out to Minis that have clearly had their VIN entered incorrectly at the DVLA

. I've also refined the vehicle decoding from VINs and this is the current cut of data, with 214S and 220GSi correctly represented now

I'm still not sure I've got the change over point on the 420 GSi Sport Turbo vs 420 GSi Turbo pinned down correct yet, so take those numbers with a pinch of salt.

Blimey - mine's the rarest of the lot! And that's before sub-division by 3dr/5dr.
Edit:
I've checked the 214S examples mentioned over the last few years on the forum against
https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/, and
obtained the following outcomes:
Taxed:
H592DOD
H842DOD
J951EPN
SORN:

Tom, unless you already had this information, this is the official VIN decoding information for early R8s, from launch to VIN 605481 (mid '92, before facelift introduction with 605482).
