Brake upgrade on 214 16v

Post by rovermax »

Just picked up a 3dr 214 and the brakes are in need of attention, was wondering if there are any easy upgrades such as bigger fronts from a more powerful or more recent car (Rover 25/45 & MG derivatives, 220 etc.) to give it some decent stopping power. As the rears are drums, I'm guessing these are limited to what linings are used but any advice would be welcome.

If it has solid discs then you can convert to venteds. These should satisfy most people. There are a couple of futher upgrades though such as fitting the ZR160/ZS180 setup.

I`m assuming you`d need to change the calipers aswell? If I was to try and source a set from the scrappy or whoever, what model should I be looking for?
Or could I just get the complete setup "off the shelf"?

Sorry for hijacking the thread btw :)

I would assume the following have them.

216 GTI / SLI /GSI (+deisels??)

All 220 models.

25 VI + mid spec upwards.

45 most.(if not all)

ZR / ZS (all)

Pretty sure some one will be along soon to confirm.

Sorry, but I am also going to hi-jack this thread.

I am thinking of uprating the brakes on my 218 diesel (as I may need new calipers before long anyway).

I have not really tried messing with brakes to muchy in the past would I be able to do a straight swap for maybe the MG calipers/brakes? Or would it require suspension work, wheel spacers etc?

Currently it has standard suspension and SEi alloys.

Hi guys, regarding 214 brake upgrade you are in luck. I have just carried it out on my 214 sei 2 door hatch. The original brakes were 232 mil solid discs. I wanted to upgrade to the 262 mil vented which are fitted om 1.8 diesels, 2.0 litres and turbo,s etc.
Firstl i got some calipers and hangers from the breakers for £35, I thn bought 262 vented discs, these were also drilled and grooved. They cost £45 on ebay with mintex pads. I thought that would do the job, but when i tried one on the car it wouldnt fit. I also had to change the suspension swivel joint that carries the hub. £30 from the breakers. Changed the bearings while I was at it. Lastly changed the break hoses to stainless steel goodridge lines. Massive difference in breaking.

correct me if i am wrong but on the later 214 SEi did they not come with 262mm front discs? Earlier SEi had 238mm front discs ? I think it depends on your VIN

The two sizes available are 232 mil solid and 262 vented and solid. Never seen any 238 mil. none listed on part sites i have been on nor the haynes manual. My 214sei is m reg and a later one and it came with 232 solid and no abs, thinks abs and larger discs was an optional extra.

I had a nose through Rimmer brothers catalogue, and my diesel has the 262mm vented disks and pads. The only improvement I can find are disks and pads of the ZR 160 xpower. Are these actually a marked improvement over the ones I have?

If not I will just stick with the ones I own :).

Also rimmer brothers list the 238mm in their catalogue, stating models "up to BD234417/908975".
