I've just updated the stats page this evening to now expose details of cars that have factory fit air con and LSDs based on decoding of the engine number recorded on the V5. A lot of cars either don't have an engine number recorded on the V5 or its complete gibberish so the filtering from these two new options isn't 100% reliable for determining exactly how many cars with those options remain, but where a valid engine number has been provided the decoding appears correct.

As ever any feedback or suggestions welcome.

I have just taken a look at the statistics. This is one amazing piece of detective work. Well done.

Blimey - mine's the rarest of the lot! And that's before sub-division by 3dr/5dr.
Edit:
I've checked the 214S examples mentioned over the last few years on the forum against
https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/, and
obtained the following outcomes:
Taxed:
H592DOD
H842DOD
J951EPN
SORN:
H119PSC
H380GDX
J319RJC
Little late to the party here... I own H592DOD, although it is currently SORN for the winter. I have owned it for 2 years, it is in regular use, excelent health and I adore it immensly.
I would however absolutely *love* to track down H842DOD given closeness in plates. It's remarkable that the 2 of the tiny percentage of the 214S models that still exist are so close together and would love the oppertunity to reunite the pair for a photo and probably make an offer depending on how vulnerable a mood I am in

but just to see and make sure it is in safe hands mainly!

Tom,
Will there be a 2022 update in May?
I did get an update of the data back in May, but due to the arrival of our first child at the end of last year, time has been at a bit of a premium. I finally managed to find some time to process the latest data and update my website at the weekend. It's now showing data from May 2022.
https://r8tech.info/index.php/survival- ... Statistics
In terms of how things have changed from last year, here is a summary based on all R8s
Code: Select all
2021 2022 Delta
TAXED 1913 1706 -10.8%
SORN 6066 5900 -2.7%
UNTAXED 643 689 7.2%
UNKNOWN 2023 2350 16.2%
The next update to the site will allow you to pick which year you want to view the stats for, at present you can only see 2022's data. Following that I will be adding some trend graphs that you'll be able to filter based on bodystyle and models in a subsequent update, when I have time of course!

Very interesting data that'll come in handy for future parts planning.
It shows that overall 'known' numbers (taxed+SORN+untaxed) are declining at about 2.5% annually, which is less than I'd feared.
Thank you for doing this analysis

I’d guess the “bangers” have all but died out now, leaving mostly cars that are either cherished classics, or those in long term ownership, perhaps mothballed. There seems to be quite a few coming out of the woodwork at the moment, where someone’s family member has sadly died or has given up driving, after the car being little used for a lengthy period.
I’d say the R3 hasn’t got many years before it’s in a similar position-you don’t see many being used daily now, and those you do are late 25’s.

Still a steady stream of breakers on Facebook, some in rare colours.
But they'll be getting short of customers if numbers decline too far.

A car on the tipping point seems to be worth more in bits than complete. Double edged sword, really!
